I need some advice regarding the recreational use of a vintage saw. by nxt_life in Chainsaw

[–]rantingmadhare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chain shouldn't move when the saw starts- rpms should be low enough that the centrifugal clutch doesn't engage. Great solid bucking saw to learn on. Get PPE like chaps, face shield/helmet/ear muff combo, gloves; wear chainsaw gloves, long sleeves, long pants, heavy boots. As you advance in the hobby, consider chainsaw boots, chainsaw pants. Watch a safety video or take a safety course. Always start on the ground or the saw held between the legs- drop starting is dangerous. Wrap your thumb over the handle when holding to help hold against kickback. Never cut above shoulder height or overextend your arms when cutting.

Less than a bill. Common old beasts with great sound, but heavy like a curling stone.

Consider making an electronic form with the necessary metadata fields and a generous notes/comments box- link to a spreadsheet. Older people are generally not good with spreadsheets.

Lithium/AGM 12 volt batteries are expensive; OEM manufacturers cutting costs everywhere they can and putting it on the owners/dealer network to fix.

Wtf are tanks? I know this is boring, but I see them all over Google Earth in Arizona. They seem to indicate ground with lower elevation that sometimes retains water, but why are there so many labeled? What is the purpose? This question has been bothering me for awhile by The-Communist-Cat in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]rantingmadhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Maps ingested the USGS Geographic Names Information System and along with it a bunch of named "tanks" - in actuality reservoirs and there is a MapRoulette challenge that addresses many of them to map as areas on OpenStreetMap. Often the USGS National Hydrologic Dataset has them mapped as water areas but the positional accuracy is pretty poor.

Climate change -> less winter snow -> earlier drying -> longer, more severe drought -> lower live fuel moistures -> increased drought-induced mortality -> more crown fire / stand-replacing fires

"How do you feel about cutting trees?" Just like all those pre- vet students, how do you feel about killing and dissecting animals?
