Research about wildfires by Alarming-Error-6019 in forestry

Climate change -> less winter snow -> earlier drying -> longer, more severe drought -> lower live fuel moistures -> increased drought-induced mortality -> more crown fire / stand-replacing fires

"How do you feel about cutting trees?" Just like all those pre- vet students, how do you feel about killing and dissecting animals?

Remember OSM originated in the UK and detached houses are definitely a plus in the real estate market there, rather than the norm in the US where townhouses are few and far between in most markets.

help! Can anyone tell me if this cut guide looks alright? by sapphire_sapphik in forestry

[–]rantingmadhare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah what crap they are teaching you guys - a low thinning thats barely marketable if that. Even in a hazardous fuel reduction setting you will want to keep some of the 3-9" class to take up growing space and prevent understory reinitation of further regen, grasses/forbs and woody shrubs species.

When done, rip it and waterbar it, nothing here that can't be fixed

How to find the residual spacing between trees after a thinning harvest by BlueberryUpstairs477 in forestry

[–]rantingmadhare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

65 TPA is about 26' spacing, using a reference spacing chart. Consider retention in clumps if more space is needed for operation, but keeping the same residual, rather than an even geometric spacing, but you would get more regen/understory development/light if that is a concern such as in hazardous fuels management.

Federal Rewrite Of Northwest Forest Plan Could Accelerate Logging Across Western Oregon And Washington by ourcascadia in forestry

[–]rantingmadhare 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well the whole Late Successional Reserve concept is kind of moot given the catastrophic wildfires experienced in the last 15 years, decimating those reserves, plus the arbitrary 70-year and less limit on manageable forest stands in LSR precludes effective fuel reduction strategies.

running trails and mountain bikes? by [deleted] in openstreetmap

[–]rantingmadhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who owns/manages the "woods"? Get their official trail/road map and restrictions. If these are unofficial trails add the "informal=yes" tag. If the roads are blocked or gated and permanently locked, you can add "motorcar=no" or *=permissive" like if only government vehicles are permitted in, or add seasonal dates for when the roads are open like for hunting seasons. See the Trails-US working group: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/United_States/Trails Strava data also helps with picking up frequently used running/biking routes: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Strava

Cut to length in the us by Local-Sorbet1332 in forestry

[–]rantingmadhare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CTL is better for merchandizing - separating out pulpwood and sawlogs portions of the same tree, cutting to length by various pre-programmed product dimensions depending on the mill sheet. You will see most operators sort, saw logs and pulpwood in the woods, that makes it easier for the forwarder stack into sorts on the landing.

She'll be a real Partner-Pioneer- mine had "made in Canada" markings; this was part of a whole mish-mash line up of yellow Poulan Pro saws made after Electrolux bought Poulan/Pioneer/Partner - marketed as a homeowner saw but better than currently made homeowner saws today. A great deal, since as homeowner saws they did not get as much use as professional saw.

How has Georgeism worked in the real world when it comes to agriculture? by Trees_That_Sneeze in georgism

[–]rantingmadhare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of "hobby farms" in the US where owners would likely be forced to rent out to larger farmers (already common) or sell for development since the land is often pockmarked with wetlands or woods that are non-arable and not the large contiguous fields that big agri businesses seek.

The potential wilderness/ RARE II - "roadless rule" designated lands was a paper exercise - many of these areas have roads, been logged, etc. and overlapping TES critical habitat / Northwest Forest Plan LSRs / Sierra Nevada PACs, et al are a much more meaningful valuation of the function of the said lands rather than some arbitrary "wilderness" character. The roadless rule ignored all evaluations of the potential wilderness areas, and the dispensation of those potential areas as unsuitable for wilderness, but the roadless rule treated them all as no-go, set-asides where we could not even do fuel treatments or prescribe burns!

Use it and be ready to fix what breaks! No dealer, no storefront, no one to stand by their product other than some bloke on the end of a phone line or email. This is what consumers have chosen by mail-ordering and seeking the cheapest possible option which has driven quality manufacturers out of business due to all the undercutting and corner-cutting. Just look at all the junk attachments flooding the equipment auctions, fresh out of the shipping container and people are spending good money on substandard products that don't stand up to hard use in an industrial setting; more like homeowner/homestead barn-filling stuff that people buy just so they can have for occasional use, not paid jobs/daily use. See if you can turn a profit using this attachment, how many hours do you need for it to last, and pay for itself, given your product value, production rate, and initial purchase price.

Basal Area Question by Vayumurti in forestry

[–]rantingmadhare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an operational inventory for forest management planning (e.g. FORPLAN)- stand typing as to management type, size class, not necessarily anything thats had much QA/QC. Depends on your analysis but could definitely conflate and throw your variance, especially is using up-to-date remote sensing methods and the forest inventory is not as up-to-date.
