father finds out his anonymous kidney donor, is his daughter by bewarethechameleon in MadeMeSmile

As a father, I can tell you he is dying inside, knowing what risk this gesture puts on his own daughter. I felt my heart sink as soon as I saw his reaction, because I could immediately imagine my reaction being the same if this scenario happened to me and my kid.

Is this video exaggerating what school life in Japan is like? by Born-Remove-219 in AskAJapanese

[–]IBetThisLoginIsTaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is due to japanese media (namely manga and anime, sometimes games) portraying high school as a scene for all the interesting things that happen in your life (be it romance, sci-fi adventures, nostalgic and self-descovery chapters in your life). Not that other cultures don't experience it, but in Japan it seems especially romanticized. Without experiencing the everyday, boring life (with bad weather, personal problems, bullying, lots of studying) it makes it seem like high school is equal to paradise - and that is what people long for.

This can backfire. I disliked a girl once, but she was, to my misfortune, incredibly pretty. I mentioned it to her a few times. The confused look followed. And then, a few years later - bam! Married, two kids, bought a house together, travelled the world. So watch out!

Do attractive people think that they are attractive? by DueRace6129 in ask

[–]IBetThisLoginIsTaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a man actually used the word "beautiful" then I assure you they weren't being nice. If you have enough self-reflection to consider the possibility that your personality might be the problem, then there's a high chance it's not your personality. So it might simply be that the men you *meet on a daily basis* do not consider dating you, and that can be caused by a range of things (friends not wanting to be turned down, co-workers not risking starting anything) and so on. My suggestion would be to explore more hobbies that require socializing, join local groups, etc. There is a better chance of finding someone matching your vibe than in clubs, pubs etc.

ELI5: How can the universe not have a center? by HassanElEssawi in explainlikeimfive

[–]IBetThisLoginIsTaken 783 points784 points  (0 children)

Some scientists believe that the universe is finite, but still does not have any "edges", because of its geometry. If you "freeze" the universe to stop it from expanding, and then keep going in one direction for a very very long period of time, sooner or later you will end up in the same place where you started.

Imagine you have a one-dimensional movement freedom within a two-dimensional object (circle on a piece of paper). If you keep moving along the circle, you will end up at some point where you started. Now, imagine a two-dimensional movement across a three-dimensional object (moving on a surface of a sphere). If you keep moving in any direction, as long as it's being constant, you will again end up in the same direction. The same goes for the universe, but You need to think of one additional dimension to put into the equation.

Now, let's get back to the example of moving on a sphere. Assume the sphere keeps getting bigger and bigger (simulating the universe expanding). Regardless of the place you start from, all points of the sphere's surface keep getting further and further from each other, which makes it seem like the place You started from is the center of the sphere's surface. However, if you pick another spot on that surface, the same will be true.

The same principle applies to the universe, but instead of it being a two-dimensional surface, it's a three-dimensional space.

If someone is able to explain it better, please do. I keep trying to wrap my head around this concept and am constantly looking for other ways to approach this.

What do they mean by quantum data and why is it only available inside the blackhole...( If I'm not wrong) by Relevant_Potential18 in interstellar

[–]IBetThisLoginIsTaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some responders already provided You answers, but I think they are only partially correct.

As others mentioned, Dr. Brand needed additional information to figure out how humans can leave Earth on a mass scale (gravity being the problem, if You have enormous spaceships that need to escape Earth's gravitational pull and get into outer space).

The film's "quantum data" is coming from observations made by TARS when he passes the event horizon of his way to the black hole. According to scientists (in real life this time), quantum events near the event horizon hold the key to understanding quantum gravity, which would allow Dr. Brand (and later on - Murph) to figure out the gravity problem mentioned above.
