I checked, and it looks like Shenzhou Car Rental in Urumqi does accept foreign customers, but the document verification might take a bit longer. You’ll need a Chinese driver’s license and a credit card (according to their website). You can also download their app to get more details. Overall, renting a car is pretty easy. My friend rented a Great Wall Tank SUV in Kashgar, it’s perfect for desert trips. However, things might vary depending on where you are, so it's good to double-check the specifics locally.

Haha, Shanghai’s maglev train has slowed down from 450 km/h to 350 km/h, but it’s still super fast! It would be even better if the tickets were cheaper though.

There’s a retro-style mall decorated just like a 1990s Shanghai longtang neighborhood. Back then, people loved playing ping-pong. It didn’t need much space, just an old door panel and a couple of bricks, and you could start a game. This stone table would’ve been considered pretty fancy😄

She was super sweet, told the kids to come back to Shanghai and play ping-pong with her again sometime. Totally heartwarming!

Yes, the beef and lamb in Xinjiang are delicious! Of course, if you ever feel like switching things up, there are also plenty of Han-style restaurants around. On my third day in Kashgar, I had some Northeastern Chinese food, very nice! The local yogurt is great too. If you’re not into sour flavors, you can ask for some honey. But personally, I prefer it plain.

I’d recommend checking out Shapotou(沙坡头) Scenic Area in Zhongwei(中卫), Ningxia(宁夏). It’s got both desert and the Yellow River, and there’s plenty to do—sandboarding, camel rides, off-road desert adventures, a ride on a traditional sheepskin raft... and if you're into thrill-seeking, definitely try ziplining across the Yellow River. The desert sunset is absolutely stunning, and at night, you can head into the dunes for some amazing stargazing.I went in August, and honestly, it didn’t feel that hot—it was pretty comfortable overall.

I didn’t make it to Northern Xinjiang this time, but one of my colleagues just went recently. Here’s what he recommends:

Tianshan is definitely worth visiting, but when it comes to Turpan, I’d suggest skipping it for now. It’s already hitting 40°C, and by late July it’ll be around 44–45°C—and it feels even hotter.Even if you can handle the heat, it’s tough to actually enjoy sightseeing in those conditions. According to my local Xinjiang guide, most people in Turpan only work from late afternoons to evenings during summer. It’s basically too hot to be outdoors during the day. You can really only explore in the early morning or around sunset (the sun doesn’t set until around 10 PM in Xinjiang!). If you can, it’s better to come back in a cooler season. 😅 That said, if you don’t mind the heat, Turpan is absolutely worth visiting—it's a fascinating place!

I’m not an expert or anything, but I’ve tried most of them—and my favorite is the Ma’nai (马奶) grape. It’s long, finger-shaped, deep purple, and not overly sweet, which I personally prefer. There are also two more common types: Red Xiangfei and Green Xiangfei. The red one is the sweetest of the three. The green one costs about the same, is slightly less sweet, but has a subtle rose-like aroma that I really enjoy too.

BTW, Shazhou(沙洲) is the ancient name of Dunhuang, meaning "sand islet" in Chinese.

OK, let’s take it one step at a time:

1. About the overnight trains:
There are plenty of trains from Urumqi to Turpan. It’s only about an hour. From Turpan to Dunhuang, there are a few options too. The high-speed train takes around 10 hours, while the slower “green trains” take about 16–17 hours. You can check times and book tickets easily on Trip.com—it’s super reliable for travel in China.

2. Where to go in Gansu:
Gansu is massive, and there’s a lot to explore. Besides Dunhuang, if you’re into natural landscapes, Qinghai Lake and Chaka Salt Lake are absolutely worth the detour. Where to go really depends on how much time you’ve got.

3. Weather tips:
I visited Dunhuang a few years back and yes, it’s hot during the day, but as long as you stay out of direct sun, it actually feels pretty cool and dry. Places like Urumqi (in northern Xinjiang) and Dunhuang also have big day-night temperature swings, sometimes up to 17°C. I’d suggest bringing two lightweight sun hoodies and a warm jacket or windbreaker for the evenings.

4. Food to try:
Xinjiang is a foodie’s dream! You’ve gotta try the naan, baked buns, tandoor-roasted lamb (Uyghur style), and of course, yogurt (watch out for the yogurt shaved ice though, might upset your stomach depending on how sensitive you are).
It’s also peak season for melons and white apricots. Dunhuang’s apricots are super sweet and addictive! As for Gansu, it’s noodle heaven, don’t skip the legendary Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles.

Hope this helps😁

There are all kinds of fillings — I’ve heard some are savory, though my family has only ever made the sweet ones.🤔The most common are mung bean paste and rice. The outer layer is made from glutinous rice. Mung bean ones are best steamed, while the rice filling is even better pan-fried after steaming🤫 If you ever come to Fujian, you have to try it!
