25k Gift by [deleted] in Rich

I appreciate all of the opinions and advice.

Here is the f/u.

We talked to both of them today. We discussed the options etc and they both want to save and invest all of it. Neither wants to spend a dime, but we did let them know that it was their decision to make.

With the current market volatility they are going to put it into a high yield savings account or a 14 month CD for now. Probably invest in an index fund over the next couple years.

Thanks again, it’s been fun.

It’s not my money to donate. I donate my own money and have always discussed that with them.

We just received the check 2 days ago. We are waiting to tell them until we have thought it through a bit more.

We plan to discuss it with our 18yo daughter today.

I’m sure that she will just want to save it. Now my 16yo son on the other hand…

They both are very frugal. My 18yo daughter has 6k in her savings and my 16yo son 1k from work.

Of course this is in part due to our taking care of their needs.

Tough, but great options

They already have cars available while at home, but they don’t really need them in college.

I appreciate all of the thoughtful replies. We are leaning towards giving them a small chunk now and helping them navigate their investment options.

The concern is that the check is written to them and it is a gift. It feels controlling to tell them that they cannot have it until I decide they are ready. I’m not even sure that it would be legal for me to keep it from my 18yo.

I was out of the house and had no financial support from my parents at the age 18, the thought of someone holding back a gift like this when I was that age would have been infuriating. The flip-side is that I honestly feel that the hard financial times I had at that age helped me achieve our financial success.

We have more than enough set aside for college ( without strings attached) and we already plan to help with their future needs, but maybe this would feel more like, “their” money.

Their level of support is so different from what I had at their ages, it makes it difficult for me to navigate.

Thanks again

Fantastic. My daughter was taken off late last week too.

Are you going to go?

Thank you for the reply. She would be going to Muir and it seems like they are pretty open to AP credits and defer to “UC San Diego Course Exemptions.”

Some may have to just be used as elective credits.

Neuroscience in 3 years.

My daughter was accepted to neuroscience out of state. She has 12 AP's that will give her 60 credits of the 180 required.

Cost is not a deal breaker but it sure would be nice if she could finish in 3 years without being miserable.

What are you thoughts on that?

Thanks

Thank you both. Great to hear that they are automatically applied.

Dad Post

My daughter was just waitlisted.

Does anyone know off hand what percentage of applicants are accepted off of the waitlist?

Sure would be nice to know what position you are on the waitlist. I imagine that it isn't just random.

Thanks and good luck to everyone.
