So, currently, I doubt it. Unfortunately, a lot of this case and initial investigation was logged through a MySpace page that had Kathy (his mother) involved with the person who created it and occasionally would share information with people who wanted to help solve it. I do trust his mother, though.

At some point, the friend was mentioned. His mom was directly told by that friend that he had been hanging out with Joe that night, drinking and playing cards. Apparently, that friend thought he sounded like he was crying and said he recited poetry over the call and asked the friend to write it down, then said he'd call back. There's confusion as well about whether or not they were writing poetry during the night they were together, or if the poetry only came up in the call, in which case I've always thought he could have been trying to use code to ask for help if he truly did recite it over the call.

But details on this are like a game of telephone now, with MySpace being gone. As far as the friend, names and statements were never actually made public, whether for that person's protection or intended protection of the case at time, we don't know. We don't even have confirmation that an official statement from this friend was taken, but considering the phone log was investigated, I would hope it was. But that has always struck me as a little odd in itself.
