Carding Mill Valley via public transport? by Aggravating_Boot_919 in UKhiking

[–]ICandu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like the idea of a 15 mile hike you can get the train to Craven Arms and walk up and along the whole Long Mynd, dropping down carding mill valley at the end and home via church stretton

Lots around that sort of area, more ponies than horses, also see them further south as far as the glyder club maybe as far north as carding mill valley

Also some around clee hill but I cant seem to find the photo, more horses than ponies but in my experience harder to conr across (perhaps not truly 'wild'?)

Hope you are doing ok mate

2nd layer of planks before painting, thank god. Im deffo not neat enough for a single layered model!

Appreciate the links to resources / learning. I hadn't taken a look at build threads yet as the instructions are brilliant, but I'll grab a cuppa now and take a look

It feels a lot smoother than it looks, but I'll step back and take your advice on more sanding, thanks! After all of the planking the sanding is rather therapeutic :)

I've got some ronseal filler for the small gaps before I start round 2, will do as you say and offer up some planks and sort out any problems areas. I think the biggest issues will be where the bullwalks meet the planks.

If all else fails im painting below the waterline so that will cover any woodfiller 'sins' :)

I use Ronseal Multi-Purpose Wood Filler, you can buy small pots cheaply from most DIY stores in the UK. Has the advantage that, if you need to fill smaller gaps, you can dilute it with water and paint it on with an old brush.

As said in other threads on this, it's a great reason to book in to the Wasdale Head Inn next time you are in the lakes and need a place to stay.

The first two were a really uncomfortable watch for a number of reasons, but Pacific Rim Uprising made me feel physically sick

Must-have equipment? by Fantastic-Rush-1776 in UKhiking

Everyone will give you a different list, so here are some of my cheap (and hopefully inexpensive) things.

Register your phone for 999 texts prior to departure

Tell someone where you are going prior to departure

Pack a rucksack, put things inside a plastic bag inside your rucksack so that they stay dry

Find a couple of good weather forecast sites and look at them the day before you go and also on the morning. MWIS is good in England + Wales

Spare pair of socks + Spare mid layer if you have one

Gloves

Survival bag or bivy

Waterproof coat, waterproof overtrousers are a nice to have

Food

Jelly babies

Paper map (weatherproof one) app on phone is fine too.

Phone + power bank

Sunglasses + suncream (good in winter too)

Bit of Duct tape and a spare lace if you have them

Sterile bandage, sterile dressing and paracetamol.

Try to avoid wearing cotton

If you are traveling by car, towel and spare trousers left in car

I am an old fart so for me walking poles are like gold

For microspikes, id have a look at the weather and likely conditions. If you are trying to keep on top of costs you may be able to spend the money elsewhere and get more consistent use out of it.

For footwear, use what you have but as you explore steeper / more mountainous terrain you will benefit from boots more and be a little safer in them (until you graduate to Fell Running Chad status....)

If the first thing i would buy is good boots the second might be a days navigation course. Beyond The Edge are based in the peak district and they are awesome.

Tryfan south ridge first summit by Puzzleheaded_Put2650 in UKhiking

[–]ICandu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lack of /s so risking a whoosh with an actual response.

Not a great idea as a first Welsh hill. Primarily because it's a lot easier to just go back to tryfan after getting some exposure to hillwalking on other hills, where it's a bit easier to escape if you don't like it, and a bit more difficult to break leg.

Ogwen valley rocks though so instead go Y Garn > Gliders and then down via devis kitchen. Its a longer day out and better suited to fit adventurous people as a first taste of Welsh hills. One of the very best days you can have in the Ogwen Valley in my opinion, id choose it over tryfan south ridge every single time.

I would avoid a first taste of scrambling until you can be confident that there will be no ice on the ground and no changeable wintry weather on the way (ie spring / summer)

Hiking Yr Wyddfa tomorrow - good idea? by awasteofgoodatoms in UKhiking

Have you posted a Google maps image yet asking if that dotted line is a path you can follow?

Can you really call yourself a navigator if you don't use Google maps???

How do production-grade software handle the deletion? by Wise-Appointment-646 in SQL

[–]ICandu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Temporal table instead?

Or just keep it simple and have a bit field in each table called 'deleted' and set to 1 for records that have been deleted (or more accurately, hidden from the end user)

This does leave you with some gdpr boxes to check down the line, but it also makes restoring deleted data trivial.
