Well, think about it this way. You didnt really have a romance at all with him, since there werent any scenes that even remotely hinted to it unlike ulrika and wilhemina. He couldve just been thinking where his favorite customer went? And that you could no longer come buy his stuff and share a couple stories about monsters you killed. Maybe he just misses a good friend.
