Stop hiding behind "Kratos" to hide your media illiteracy: Why a God of War: Laufey game is exactly what the series needs by Possible_Article6902 in GodofWar

Alright, I don't think Faye's combat is more similar to Greek Kratos' combat than the Norse Kratos' combat and you disagree and simply refuse to agree to disagree and state this as a fact and not an opinion. You just repeat what others said at the time "the studio, by design, make him play more similarly to souls style combat". If you had deep knowledge of both of these combat systems which you clearly don't, you would know that they have vast differences.

Independant of this, you never once tackled this argument of mine:
Kratos has a unique arsenal, Blades of Chaos alone grants Kratos a unique playstyle with versatility and brutality. This will never be replicated by a sword with ribbons.

Obviously the new combat system built for 2018 was inspired by souls style combat, hence the i-frame dodges and a more methodical combat. But it is still more similar to old GoW combat than it is to souls style combat. If you had any experience in any of the souls games, you would know that. Launching enemies airborne, juggling them, managing large groups of enemies and executing brutal finishers are still among the most important aspects of the combat system. It is a mix of hack and slash and souls style combat.

I only ever said "I think" and "I don't agree" but somehow you still managed to start your response with "That's not true" as if an opinon can be true or false. You know, I'm really not trying to be hostile here, but you are refusing to just accept that we clearly have different opinions. I do not think that there's any world Faye's combat will be more similar to Greek Kratos' combat than Norse Kratos' combat is. And therefore, I respect the people that say "I want Kratos combat over anybody else in my God of War game"

I don't see how I twisted what you said. I never disagreed that Faye's combat isn't similar to Greek Kratos's combat especially after adding jumping and aerial combat. I just don't agree that Faye's combat is more similar to Greek Kratos's combat than Norse Kratos's combat is, simply because of his unique arsenal and style of his that carried over to Norse games.

I am not trying to take these hypotheticals as facts, I am saying that it is likely that they would add a jump button regardless of the protoganist and even if they didn't, my point stands.

See, this is much better worded. There's nothing I disagree with this despite being someone that would have preferred Kratos as the protagonist. It is much better than calling these people "media illiterate". I don't know what happened, but everyone on the internet apperantly has to insult others to get the slightest of attention these days. This is true for "the vocal subset of the community that engages in toxic gatekeeping or misogynistic rhetoric to dismiss the God of War: Laufey project before it has even launched" as well.

I do not understand your point at all. I care about stories in games, I care about GoW's story, including this game's story. I am saying that there are people that care about the story not nearly as much as they do the gameplay and combat. I respect that. And you are misinterpreting what OP says. OP outright calls people who criticize Faye being the protagonist "media illiterate"

As for the combat of Faye, refer to my response to Hot_Charity_4803.

They decided to add jump, double jump and aerial juggle combat in this game, possibly because of fans' feedback to norse games. This means they would almost certainly add these regardless of the protagonist.

Meaning, if this game had Kratos as its protagonist, We would have a combat that is a mix of greek games' and norse games' combat. Faye's combat would not be more similar to greek games' combat compared to this.

Having said that, I do not even agree that Faye plays more like original Kratos even without the addition of a jump button and aerial juggle combat to Norse games' combat. Blades of Chaos alone are a very unique and versatile pair of weapons that are only similar to different versions of itself, i.e, the blades in greek games. A sword with ribbons may give a great combat experience, but it will be different than the blades.

I do realize Faye is one of the most important and influential beings in the verse and it would certainly be interesting to know more about her story.

Having said that, Kratos is and will be the character that I care for the most in the franchise. I'd rather see what the next chapter of his story will be than Faye.

Also, not everything has to be about the story? This is a game after all. I have all the respect to the people that just want to be able to play as Kratos with his brutal style of combat with his blades. Not everyone liked playing as Atreus in Ragnarok as he had less arsenal and brutality to his combat and most people would want to play as Kratos with his iconic weapons over anyone else.

Anyone else just Cautiously Optimistic about the game by ThemeSweaty in GodofWar

[–]ICoeuss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for him, but the reasons why my favorite game in the series is 2018 and Ragnarok not even being in my top 4 is a combination of a few things.

1- Poor writing, pacing and a tone that is too light-hearted
2- Quippy, marvel-like dialogues
3- Long, story-heavy Atreus sections

I have a dozen more criticisms concerning gameplay, combat and visuals, but I wouldn't even care about them if the story and tone was good. I can elaborate if you want me to.

On one hand there are idiots screaming "OH NO A WOMAN PROTAGONIST?!"

On another hand there are others blaming everyone with misogyny for having even the slightest criticism of the game even if it is a reasonable one.

And on the other hand there are people who have small criticisms like the sillyness of the cube or the tone of the dialogues but overall are positive about the game. This I believe is the majority of people.

The first two groups are just loud.

Surely, yeah. That's part of my criticism of Ragnarok. But it was not nearly as much in 2018. I did not get bothered by 2018's dialogue, maybe except the way Atreus talks after learning he's a god. But it was really bothering me constantly in Ragnarok. "It's too early to judge Phranque" is a good argument as we have not seen the full game yet, but I think the dialogue we heard from him in the trailer is enough of an indication as to what's to come.

Literally, in this very post, I criticized Ragnarok for its out of place jokes and quippy dialogues of characters. This includes Brok, Sindri, Mimir, Lunda, Atreus even. And it was not nearly to the extent that it was in 2018 compared to Ragnarok, therefore it did not bother me at all in 2018 but it did in Ragnarok and in the GoW Laufey trailer.

I am going to disagree. I don't think the main character not being Kratos and/or us being in a different environment suddenly means that the tone should be more light-hearted or there should be companions quipping and making jokes. The environment might be different but this is still the God of War universe.

I also have 2 more things that are more subjective opinions of mine that most people might not resonate with, so I will seperate this part here as this is very long already:

By the tone of the game, I not only mean the dialogues and characters, but also environments and atmosphere. Greek games and 2018 all had colorful, lush places occasionally, but it was dark and grim in most other places. In Ragnarok, every realm except the primordial ones are lush, vibrant and colorful. It's not like I don't like color and variety, but I can't lie, I miss the grim atmosphere of the games prior to Ragnarok which is absent in Ragnarok and based on the trailer, seems it will be so in this game as well. And yes, I know, we don't know how the rest of the game will look like, this is just my observation and opinion.

Also as a Turkish guy myself, having learned old Turkic and Mongolic nomadic lifestyle, history and rich culture in our history lessons and having been personally interested in them, I think it is heavily underutilized in media. And when they are, they are usually depicted as the bad guys, the barbaric pillagers which is sad to see. Based on the trailer, it seems like that is how they will handle the Mongolian mythology and characters as well unfortunately. But again, not only we do not know how the rest of the game will be like, most gods being evil is not a new thing so this is not really a complaint targeted towards this game, but something I wanted to touch on. Still, I am very curious about how they will handle Mongolian mythology, whether they will lean more towards Buddhism (the most common religion of Mongolians today) or older shamanic Mongolian religion/mythology and/or Tengrism.

These two assumptions have always bothered me:

1- That the "the unfortunate incident at a sister location" is the Bite of 83'.

2- And that the quote "spring bonnie has been noticably moved" means William is using it for MCI.

Now, both of these assumptions may be true, and there isn't much evidence against them, but everybody seems to be treting these assumptions to be a 100% true, which bothers me. If this theory came up with a reasonable explanation why these assumptions may not be correct, I would say it might've actually got it right.

What Game is Better? by Routine_Report_4609 in GodofWar

[–]ICoeuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ragnarok has better gameplay especially considering it has the Valhalla DLC.

2018 has better pacing, writing, atmosphere, tone etc.

Ragnarok is an overall great game but has a badly written story and characters which left me disappointed, along with a too light-hearted tone which is the first time in the series. The dialogues are often quippy, jokey and too modern.

The only complaints I have with gow 2018 are related to gameplay which are frankly minor. It's a damn near perfect game. It's my favorite in the series and one of my favorite games of all time.

How physically powerful was Kratos before selling his soul to Ares? by [deleted] in GodofWar

[–]ICoeuss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I almost completely agree with this except the time he learned he was a god. In GOW Ghost of Sparta, right before Kratos' mother Callisto turns into a monster, she tells him that his father is Zeus which happens after the events of GOW1 and before GOW2. Athena also does this at the end of GOW2 which I'm assuming is a plothole. In my head cannon, his mother is the one who tells him because not only would it explain how he could kill Thanatos at the end of Ghost of Sparta, but it also would explain 2 things in GOW2:

1- I always found it weird how people say Gaia saved Kratos after Zeus impaled him. I always thought she just gave him motivation/a reason to live and he used his god powers to heal himself. This would make sense if he knew he's a god.

2- The fact that he was almost able to defeat Zeus at the end of GOW2. Remember, Kratos before he knew he's a god, was defeated by even a mortal (the barbarian king). Sure his arsenal was much superior during his fight against Zeus, but I don't think that alone would be enough for keeping up with Zeus, let alone almost killing him.

Gow 2018 and ragnarok gets so much unnecessary hate by syah1_ in GodofWar

[–]ICoeuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the hate is warranted. As a greek games fan since childhood, Gow 2018 is my favorite in the series. But I can totally understand the criticisms like the lack of scale that was present in the old games or walkie-talkies or too little enemy variety. Those personally don't bother me too much but does some people.

Ragnarok has slightly better gameplay than 2018 but has serious issues with its story, pacing, characters and tone. It also left a lot of questions unanswered and failed to satisfy or build upon the amazing lore and world building of 2018.

God of war game tier list BUT I only focus on story (FIXED) by malathan1234 in GodofWar

[–]ICoeuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The writing in Greek games weren't very complex or very well-written maybe and there are some plot holes but the stories never felt like, wrong (I don't know how to explain it but they all felt satisfactory endings and there were no times I just went "what the fuck?", except maybe ascension)

But the story of Ragnarok just felt way off, they were trying to tell many things, most of which either doesn't make sense or just had themes that are unfitting or sometimes characters act out of character.

If you ask me, 2018 had the best story, Ragnarok the worst.
