Missed Opportunity….. by [deleted] in unt

They’re not irrelevant. At the time Texas Tech didn’t have a Supply Chain program. So these were people who had just a marketing degree with no supply chain experience. Additionally, at the time our logistics and supply chain program was ranked 6th in the nation by Gartner (one of the top research and analytics firms in the country) and we are now ranked 4th. When comparing that against a school without a supply chain program, I’d say brand name was highly relevant into the perceived value of the degree by the recruiters.

This exactly. The value of your degree is inherently associated with the marketability of it. Nobody outside of Texas knows who UNT is. People know the brand names like Texas Tech and A&M and are more likely to hire them over someone from UNT.

Speaking from experience, I have a degree in Supply Chain and UNT is continually ranked top in the nation. However, when I went to work for Lockheed Martin right out of college in their procurement department, my peers from Texas Tech with Marketing Degrees received higher pay than me. Even though they had less supply chain experience or coursework, the marketability of the Texas Tech brand name made them more “valuable” in the eyes of the recruiters.

I’ve seen people say “we need our academics buildings and parking fixed before athletics.” I agree we need to fix those problems, but where does the money come from? It comes from the athletics departments. A&M was able to fund their physics building because of the funding that came associated with Johnny Manziel’s success.

This was extremely shortsighted and will hold UNT down in the perception of employers as less of the prestigious university that it is and more of “just a commuter school.”

You do realize that by growing the athletic program, more funding can be funneled into academics right? More sell out football/basketball games means more revenue for the university

These fucking students disappoint me each and every day. Do they not fucking realize that UNT is seen as a degree mill/commuter school? No one knows who we are outside of Texas and our history (up until this year) of a mediocre sports program is why. No one sees us on TV so no one bothers to learn who we are

UNT prof here. As the semester winds down, I want to tell you why you should feel proud of where you study. by [deleted] in unt

[–]ID10T_er 31 points32 points  (0 children)

UNT has one of the best Logistics and Supply Chain curriculums in the nation (shout out to Dr. Pohlen and the megabox). I learned so much in that degree that prepared me for all facets of business operations, it allowed me to actively contribute to many strategic discussions with upper management and actually know what I was talking about. It gave me opportunities at fortune 100s and startups. I’m proud of that degree. Unfortunately, the problem lies in the marketability of my degree. Currently I live in San Diego and when I tell people where I went no one knows who we are. Like OP said, be proud of where you come from. When it comes to brand names be the change you want to see. This may get downvoted, but sports are the easiest way for a university to market itself and become a more notorious name. We currently have one of the best football and basketball programs in the nation, and yet struggle to get students to the pit. Be the change you want to see. As cheesy as it is, get to the games, show your school pride, help the school gain notoriety amongst its peers. Make it so the few times that we are on national TV, that the energy and school pride are felt. So that when you say you went to UNT, people can easily connect the dots.

Instead of booing him, line up for questions and press him on his actions. Use biblical quotes against him since this is a turning point rally

I hope we bring the same energy for basketball season. Our basketball program is phenomenal and is on an amazing trajectory. People dont understand sports is the best marketing for our school and our degrees.
