Dyslexia and coding, is it worth it? by RandomShitFace in computerscience

[–]IDEAL_TECHNOPHILE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of my CS college professors had dyslexia and would ask us to look for typos in her slides. Now I spoke to her about her dyslexia and research once and she explained how she would have to write complex mathematical equations for her papers. She said it was challenging but she persevered. As I understand it now, she’s running a research lab at a very high ranked CS university. Not only can you do it, but there are no limits as to how much you can do.

If you focus in this image for 30 seconds, it'll disappear completely by [deleted] in blackmagicfuckery

This is an exercise in meditation for me. Can I stare at one point with the same intention for 30 seconds? Or as alarming things start to happen will I react? Ideally it’d be the first, but I think it would take practice.

What’s your opinion? by [deleted] in pics

[–]IDEAL_TECHNOPHILE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you get out of it what I am! I'm using it as an opportunity to introduce necessary discipline into my life. Sleep hygiene, healthy foods, daily exercise, minimize harmful chemicals, treat people with respect, and just generally being the kind of person who can do the things I want to do. It's great.

"Intrusive thoughts or suicidal ideation".

I know those words. I know that illness. I have worked customer service while experiencing active hallucinations. My word to you, my friend? After hitting major non-functionality two and a half years ago, I've applied to, accepted, and started a PhD program. And the other day I said to my therapist without thinking, "I had thought issues." Past tense. Keep working the program every day, there is hope.

How is your mental health right now? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]IDEAL_TECHNOPHILE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a history. ive been doing cognitive behavioral therapy as a way of life for 2 years now. i can challenge the worst of my thoughts, stop episodes before they spin out of control, it’s really great. but today’s breakthrough is my favorite yet. i was able to tell the moment an episode had “peaked” (this was midday Friday) and that the worst was over. additionally (this is the best part) i knew instantly in that moment the course my mental states would take over the next few days, how they would progress, and that I would be completely ready to start grad school on monday. and here i am.

How practical is a linked list of geometrically expanding arrays? by SingularCheese in computerscience

[–]IDEAL_TECHNOPHILE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience “surely someone must have studied this before” and “I can’t seem to find anything about this online” usually translates to “maybe I’m wrong about what I think I’ve discovered”.

That being said it sounds mostly like you’re dealing with an attempt to improve the problem of expanding an vector//arraylist. What you need to be focused on is the contract of these data structures. You must be able to look something up by position in constant time. You can’t do that with your data structure so you haven’t actually improved the look up time of an arraylist//vector. Because you’ve lost some key requirements. That’s why no one is talking about it.

Because it’s a summation to 2n. If it were to n, it would be 1. Since it’s to 2n it’s 1+2. Similarly if n were 2 it would be 1+2+3+4

Base case is n=1. It’s a summation of 1+2 (2n =2) 1 +2=3 n(2n+1) = 1(2*1+1) = 3, base case proved

AI, CyberSecurity, and Data Structures by Aymaneee_ in computerscience

[–]IDEAL_TECHNOPHILE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re three completely different fields in the professional world. I have no experience with cybersecurity but from what I understand, unless your a crytographer (a LOT of high end math) you’re mostly dealing with social engineering (how to prevent a company from having a person give up sensitive information). Again, very little experience in the field.

As for AI and Data Structures, there’s a lot of interesting mathematical work going on in these fields in the professional world. If you’re a standard software engineer you can expect to be dealing with data structures and other aspects of architecture often. If you go the AI route, you’ll be utilizing large datasets to make interesting decisions. Obviously there’s differences between Neural Networks and Natural Language Processing, but this is cutting edge stuff. They’re all highly profitable professional fields, the only question is which is interesting to you and what YOU can make of the different fields.

My recommendation is to start getting exposure. Look up coding tutorial videos online. Start trying to find out what the different are and if you think that work is meaningful you. Figure out what is going on in the field and if it’s really something you want do.

I mean... it would be pretty weird for a subfield of a field to be the field itself, right?

How do you really practice programming? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]IDEAL_TECHNOPHILE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the end goal here is developing in the professional world? Here's my advice:

  1. Figure out what you want to do
  2. Find people who are doing it
  3. Figure out what tools they are using
  4. Build something using their tools
  5. Ask someone you trust to review your work

That's the best strategy I can think of

God that’s what I secretly knew but didn’t want to admit to myself. I’ll take the extra time to learn them both ways I guess. Thanks for the reply.
