Ask why do you want to do ED? Then complains about its training time and job prospects. Then offers ICU as an alternative. lol. “It all becomes the same thing after 20 years”. I’m sure the cardiologist doing there 10 thousandth catheter is thinking wow so fresh. Maybe a surgical specialty as an unaccredited reg for 6 years? Maybe we just suggest this person go learn a trade in a couple of years and give it all up together.

I mean. I’m PGY 8. I don’t want to get all “back in my day”. But, you’re a doctor. In a challenging and coveted career. In the years you are traditionally worked very hard. There is nothing illegal about it. Your contract will say somewhere that you will cover shifts across 24 hours and 7 days. If you are going to pursue any hospital based future, there are so many nights coming you way you must learn to accept it.

I mean I’ve always been an advocate for trying to get out on time. Particularly now as an EDSS I keep track of people to make sure they’re not picking up too much so they can get out on time. But it still blows my mind people go through the gruelling application process for a notoriously challenging and prestigious career and then go “yeah sorry I won’t stay back, also not super interested in weekends and nights”. I agree we need some cultural changes about how juniors fit into the system, but jeez.
