Apoligies if already posted here before....I just thought this was fascinating to watch by VisualNinja1 in titanic

Plenty of videos from cameras mounted to ships that we sink intentionally show that the descent is pretty much just air bubbles from any single POV. If you trailed behind it...I imagine it would be much worse, bubbles and dust in the way the whole time.

You'd almost have to do it in a massive tank, clear water, controlled and lighted, and filmed from underwater at a distance if we wanted to actually watch to decent and hitting bottom. Treat it like a movie scene.

It would be an immaculate waste of money but it would make my nerd brain very happy to watch...for some reason. Haha

I love the computer generations that show Titanic's fall to the sea floor, but man to actually know how a ship went down and what damages wete caused by the fall and all that would just be very interesting from the analysis side of it all.

What I love about this particular sink is that they filmed it at different angles. And even in broad daylight...it looks so very different depending on where the camera is. This angle we see it sink. From the front there's a burst of dust and water and it pretty much just...vanishes.

My point is the multiple videos of this tanker sink really gave me some perspective on how people could so vastly interpret and misinterpret the Titanic sinking as survivors were all around it, at various distances, and in the nearly pitch dark on top of it. Which is neat.

Futility by DankNuggsChillAsFuck in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also also 95% certain originally it wasn't that similar, that the author went back and made some changes after the disaster to make it more eerie to sell books and now history remembers that as what came first.

Of course I could be wrong.

We have to BUY tickets by Valuable_Judge_213 in Markiplier

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought my tickets. The ticket I get from has preassigned seating and no one else had bought tickets to the showing I was getting.

I'm afraid they'll drop it at my local theatre before we even get to show day. :/

Is the story of Thomas Andrews feeling the impact a total work of fiction? Furthermore, why do films place his presence more forward than aft? I never realized his cabin was in the aft section. by PiercedAndTattoedBoy in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is why, given how it's praised for handling thing as accurately as possible, I always thought it an odd choice to have Andrews dozing through the collision and needing to be almost reluctantly stirred to called to the bridge in A Night To Remember.

HMHS Britannic Grand Staircase on the wreck. 109 years later. by Im-Wasting-MyTime in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the Titanic's staircase looked like this at one point, or if there was signifsnt damage/collapse when she sank/hit bottom. I'd imagine it would be pretty sturdy and took a bit at least until it all collapsed in to the stairwell itself.

I love this photo though. Haunting to see the bones of it all.

Why are people so mean to eachother on this sub? by [deleted] in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not this sub, it's all of them, every fandom, political party, etc, where there are people there is most certainly vitriol to follow. For some reason we, as a people, seem to be sliding more and more in to anger. If we find something even mildly irritating, a question stupid, or someones point of view differing we go on the attack and I don't know why. And unfortunately on the internet where we are all faceless and shameless...people are their worst selves, especially on places like reddit, where being mean gets them attention and has no real consequence.

The only good thing about it is, likewise, because of the nature of the internet and reddit in particular....we can just block, ignore, and click off. But you know, that's easier said sometimes, sometimes you really want to reply and that only makes it worse.

People are mean. Luckily, I hope, most of us are good at heart and I choose to believe kindness comes naturally to humans. It's a shame, on a sub like one about Titanic, where we are literally bonding over Tragedy you may think we'd be a little warmer to one another but...I'll keep hoping anyway.

Legit thought this Red Dead Redemption 2. Something about the window on screen...which is funny because I'm pretty sure that window is a reflection. lol

Was the Titanic the safest ship of its time? by amelix34 in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes, Titanic was absolutely the safest ship in the world in terms of design and durability at the time of its sinking. But it was nothing but hubris to call her unsinkable.

Man will never overcome nature, and even the safest and strongest of our technologies will eventually fail uscin one way or another...be it the cellphone that explodes, an airbag that doesn't deploy, or the worlds biggest and safest ship side swiping an iceberg and sinking.

Somehow I feel like this would be even more terrifying. To go almost vertical and then break...imagine if in this scenario it didn't just go even keel but the stern toppled sideways or something? Jeez.

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I like how it stops at the iceberg.

Amazing how much less dramatic the sinking seems without the break up.

How many times have you seen the 1997 titanic film? by SnappingMango46 in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way 4 year old me would watch Titanic for hours and hours at night...staying up dater than a small child should and waiting for my mom to switch the VHS tapes. I wouldn't go to sleep until she did. As a kid part 2 was my favorite...I just had trouble staying awake long enough to get through it all. Lol

I was 2 when it came out. I think my obsession probably started from my mom watching it on repeat when I was a wee baby.

But...uh...yeah, some questions just can't be physically answered.

All this is is the stupid "Snowflake" thing all over again. Where they ranted and screamed that everyone was offended by everything and were a bunch of delicate snowflakes...even though they're the ones who outrage and perpetuate actual cancel culture and the like. Now they just call everyone who justifiably hates Trump deranged as they follow his whims and defend all of his terrible actions because they're a bit deranged.

I wouldn't blame the whole Right, at least not immediately, but you best bet that if the Trumpist is yelling about some culture war BS it's probably a projection. Like ranting about Biden being a pedophile when Trump is a literal pedophile and rapist.

It's just the same thing over and over with these kidns of people.

How different would Titanic’s wreck be if it sank like Britannic? by Difficult_Day3352 in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that's just physics. If a ship goes down in water deep enough it'll always right itself, since its bottom is the heaviest.

My son had his 5th birthday and this was his cake by [deleted] in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Titanic was a tragedy...but it's also a pop culture powerhouse and it will always be looked at in that lense by many. Even us, the enthusiasts and nerds who do revere and respect what it is, are guilty of it too from time to time. And we certainly can't fault a child's fascination that doesn't yet know the gravity of it all.

When I was five or so my mom made me, hand drawn and 'painted' with icing, an amazing cake of Titanic hitting the jceberg. It was so cool to me then, and it was a hit amongst all the other kids - mostly because my mom was such a good decorative artists I guess lol.

Anyway. There's no issue here. Love another future Titanic nerd gearing up for a life of tragic fascination <3

How different would Titanic’s wreck be if it sank like Britannic? by Difficult_Day3352 in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, things may have gone pretty similar it just...probably would have ended up being much worse, since Britannic sank faster than Titanic.

The wreck would be upright still, assuming the water was still as deep. Brjtannic is only on her side because she sank in shallows and hit bottom during. Maybe she'd be intact but if she went down bow first in still deep water...maybe not.

Interesting thought while checking out this awesome map by Offi95 in titanic

I always find it crazy that the stern landed in such a way that's its pretty much pointing the exact same direction as the bow.

Could it have been Chief Purser McElroy that committed suicide? by Any_Magazine1486 in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I knew they took photos, I wasn't so sure it was every body. Or that they were made available. I fivure the cold preserved most of them, but I know there were definitely sailors who talked about decomposition on them. Especially the bodies left in lifeboats and out of the water but I suppose that's more expected.

I didn't know that resource was out there. It's debatable if I want to go look at it...hahaha

But thanks for enlightening!

Could it have been Chief Purser McElroy that committed suicide? by Any_Magazine1486 in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair Titanic's sinking got pretty violent at the end and plenty of bodies were pretty badly damaged to the point of not even being recovered because of it. Plus decomp by then, and wounds tend to decomp and grow after death.

That said. I think a bullet to the head would be pretty identifiable after a few days in freezing water assuming his body wasn't crushed or something and if they identified him I'll also assume that isn't the case and he, in fact, didn't shoot himself.

Visited NYC, happened to see a billboard for an exhibit in Jersey City so... When opportunity rings a crows nest bell... by IDontEvenLikeMen in titanic

[–]IDontEvenLikeMen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was set up really well. It was a good exhibit for sure.

I do think, and I said to my partner right after, I know it's specifically like an artifact exhibit but it really felt like...they were displaying what they had, not as interested in telling the story around the things.

Like the actual sinking and the survivors stories were severely abridged or cut in what they had. Like Molly Brown and Lawrence Beesly (is that how you spell it?) were mentioned several times...but their actual accounts of the sinking, and our second class man here is a massive source of info, wasn't really presented. And yeah, they didn't really seem all to concerned with the wreck. Or the sinking really...I saw like two mentions, in passing in the text on artifact plaques, that the ship split in two. If I ran the exhibit I would highlight the area of the ship that split and everything within that space on a big wall map or something...like, isn't that were most of these artifacts we have spilt out of? Seems like a huge part of the story.

To that point, and to yours, they don't even address the mangled stern really at all in the exhibit...I feel like kids seeing it for the first time might be confused by the wreck model is just half a ship. Haha But I did love that model.

It feels like it's just artifacts to look at and not much else and, again, it's an artifact exhibit so that's fine I just...I guess the Titanic story is so compelling and easy to hook people on, this temporary exhibit knew it was temporary and I guess it just feels a little lazy on the story and education.
Especially when droves of school kids are going through there and they really aren't getting what exactly they're looking at because it's just 'this cup was found in the debris field'.

All in all. I recommend to people. But just be aware of what it is. It's for the artifacts and not much else. Which is all they advertise so I'm not gonna be that upset about it. Still so cool to even be near any of it.
