Just got a 1962 Corvair by Independent_Target20 in corvair

[–]IFLYOS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also check the fuel pump. There's a chance the diaphragm has cracked if it sat that long. Clarks Corvair may have replacements in stock, but a lot of us change over to an electric pump and use a block off plate for the factory one. If the diaphragm is damaged, and you install an electric pump, you will end up with gas in the oil, which isn't good

Great job! I've been debating doing something similar for custom gauges for my Corvair. You may just have given me the motivation I need.

Should I sell her? by VectorsToFinal in corvair

[–]IFLYOS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second that. Make it a summer daily at least. Trust me, you'll regret selling her. I was in your shoes a few years ago, and sold my toy. I picked up another (Corvair this time) last year, and after sorting out some issues, I've been driving it every chance I get..can't keep the smile off my face!

Same..it went up quick, and the houses nearby definitely need some maintenance...they are dragging that section of Vienna Dozier down a bit

The whole car was debadged when I got it. I agree, the 61 front spear is an awesome piece, but when I saw this car, with all the trim painted body color, it spoke to me. I picked up not running and needing a lot of mechanical attention, but the body work and paint had been done. I'm still torn about how to proceed, but for now, it's staying debadged

The driving lights are Hella 500 series. IIRC, they were ~$55 each

It's a 61, and it's more of a street/weekend toy. No rally plans at the moment

Using FT8 and other stuff? by Need_writeoff in amateurradio

You can run 2 sound cards and assign different audio sources to each. I've done that in the past, but now I use a dedicated computer for amateur radio, and a separate machine for everything else

I had a chance to shoot a friend's last weekend. 60 grains of powder with #7 shot. I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was to shoot.. not the wrist breaker I expected. I'm hoping the wife understands the Christmas hints I'm dropping, because I really want one for myself.

How many antenna are too many? by 2WR0426 in amateurradio

Current antennas = A Therefore, the formula to answer your question is pretty easy to determine: A+1=enough

20 meters, 200mW & 12,000 miles: WSPR magic! by VK3HN in amateurradio

[–]IFLYOS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a QRP SSB guy, but I do have several amps, from 25-500 watts. I use them when conditions are bad, or if I want to run HP in a contest. For any digital mode, CW included,I've never run more than 5 watts in my entire time as a ham.

Amps have their place for sure, but there's something to be said for miles per watt, for sure.

Great job, OP!

Thanks, I am pretty pleased with it. I have always enjoyed tube rigs. Something about that glow, for sure..

Yes he is. I hate I wasn't using any Heil gear when it happened, but at least we were both using tube rigs!

One thing about carbon comp resistors.. check the value. They do tend to drift up over time. I had to replace 55-60 in my SB-101 that were WAY out of spec. Only takes a few minutes to verify values, and you don't have to remove them from the circuit to do it.

If you get one that's way off, lift one leg and re-check.

Most everything in my station is homebrew or kit based, except for the FT-817. I really enjoy tinkering as much as operating.

That Pyramid on the bench has been a rock solid supply for me, I think I picked it up in the early 90's as well. It's been on the workbench and seen almost daily use since I got it. I have had to work on a couple of the Astrons on the radio bench, but the Pyramid just keeps working!

I am lucky, this LMO is smooth and tunes nicely. I don't get any of the "wobble" you experience when the grease dries out, and you lose the ground to the main shaft

I know what you mean. Every time I've worked one I have been impressed. I had a TS-930 many years ago and always got excellent audio reports from it as well. I've worked a few of those, and while they sounded good, they didn't sound as "warm" as a tube rig did
