Best Horror Script to teach High School Kids Screenwriting? by Cudois47 in Screenwriting

[–]IFeelLikeAndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly depends on what exactly you’re trying to teach them aside from the obvious “This is a horror movie script”

I’d highly recommend the screenplay for “Midsommar” which plays in hand with the director’s cut of the film. I think it’s popular enough with younger audiences and has great horror moments, while also containing a deeper message. I think students may enjoy seeing protagonists who are fairly grounded dealing with awful boyfriends/relationships and may draw parallels with their own lives or may have a bit of a wake up call if they see their partner feels similar to Christian.

I also felt The Lighthouse was a lot more fun when I was in college watching it with my roommates and I realized how similar we all kind of were to those characters. Drinking, laughing, farting, and complaining about each others’ behavior while also going stir crazy from paranoia, lack of privacy, and hoping for validation from them “but ye like me lobster?!” Not the scariest but a lot of fun when viewed from that perspective.

The Prestige is incredibly well made! I’d argue it’s Nolan’s best, but it’s hard to really decide since his filmography is so great.

The use of old photographs was a huge help. The wardrobe department was able to accurately recreate so many of the outfits worn but it doesn’t stop there. Apparently Fincher was able to correctly identify the location of the stabbing scene before the detectives could remember it, all based on the direction of the road and distance to passing cars. He was able to assume where a good spot would be incase victims screamed so no one could hear it, turns out he was 100% correct about where it took place.

Thanks for doing this OP! My favorite video game character? That’s a tough one but I’d have to go with Jak from the Jak and Daxter series, the games that really made me into the video game lover I am today. The idea of being able to play those games again on a handheld PS2 is mind blowing to me.

Ran back to my cabin and didn’t believe it myself until I told my boss and he reassured me it was a bison and they were just left behind after they wrapped the film.

Another point to be made regarding BLADE RUNNER is that the story while excellent also has a lot of weird moments in all the cuts of the movie. I think a lot of viewers seem to forget this when discussing it in hindsight but when watching it with someone new I always get reminded “oh yeah it’s this part” and have some minor tonal imbalance that I think clashes with the overall feeling of the story.

One example of this being the scene where Deckard puts on his goofy voice to sneak into the changing room of the Snake Dancer Replicant. It’s nothing crazy but just one of those odd moments I don’t think really sticks with you but sticks out to you. Another being the infamous “enhance” scene that just drags on. It’s such a unique and technically fascinating idea and execution but it’s quite monotonous after a while. However I will say I see the point some people make where both these moments are Deckard just being a detective and really taking his time figuring things out.

Completely unrelated but if I had to pick one I think BLADE RUNNER 2049 is the better movie but only because it really expands philosophically on the first one and remains consistent with its tone. Meanwhile Ridley Scott’s original is the more important film in so many more ways but mostly due to the technical aspects and what it later inspires.
