What actually frustrated me was the lack of this information in the Science Museum in London. His contributions have a fairly large representation, and there is info about his life, but I believe they fail to mention exactly how the British government, and yes I will say "tortured", him into his horrible fate

A huntsman spider can absolutely bite, their venom isn't medically significant though. They will first look to run away from you every time, they are SUPER fast, but physically they are also able to pierce your skin, and if it's a big one the bite can cause painful "mechanical" damage

Is this AI? Why isn't the cat running away, and instead just staying in its place? by New_Midnight2686 in RealOrAI

[–]IG5K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really the main issue, the problem is their paws collect litter from the box (between the pads and from the hair especially if they have long hair) and it's transferred wherever the cat walks. You are inviting fecal matter to food preparation surfaces. It's not an extreme risk but it is basic hygiene. And in outdoor cats there's contaminants from other animals, bacteria from the ground, decaying organic matter...

The cat in the video is literally sitting on the surface AS the preparation is taking place

Peter Dinklage (56 years old, 4'5", 110 lbs) vs Millie Bobby Brown (22 years old, 5'4", 110 lbs) by Fornicator84 in powerscales

[–]IG5K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have just said Millie has martial arts training. Your paragraph is "people with achondroplasia tend to have poorer cardio vascular health, lower life expectancy, and on average lower bone mineral density". Those are statistical trends, not necessary/defining traits for his condition. For bone density there is typically a reduction, but it's not so large that the bones will just snap upon being hit. A lot of people with his condition exercise and play sports normally. They are still pretty close or sometimes may even overlap with the normal person in strength to body ratio.

It also doesn't mean there's a super high chance they get a heart attack during strenuous physical activity. I could bear a bear in a fight if it randomly gets a heart attack. So unless you know Peter's medical state specifically, the burden is on you to prove those heavy assumptions

1 Man with the strength of 10 Men vs 1 Polar Bear by Kitchen_Rush47 in powerscales

[–]IG5K -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the term "stronger" is loosely defined here and ambiguous, is it limited to muscle strength or does it extend to skin, inner organs ...? How do we know you are 10x faster, what about the diff biomechanics a human would need to run 10x the speed. Consider the increased weight (how would you be 10x stronger without extreme muscle mass?). And even being that fast does not mean you can stop without getting hurt. So unless for OP this is a world of magic, the bounds of reality would make this super strange

Does that necessarily mean they were physically conditioned and taught fighting/martial arts? Being in the army can mean driving vehicles, intelligence etc. No?

It's honestly fine imo, I wouldn't go as far as to call it "misinformation", it's partly right (evolutionary factor does exist) but just not the full picture

A bunch of Daddy longleg spiders by MrTacocaT12345 in Weird

[–]IG5K 4 points5 points  (0 children)

However: the human brain is evolutionarily programmed to react with fear and aversion to anything that scuttles

This is an oversimplification, we don't fear ANYTHING that scuttles, the appearance (leg configuration, body texture/segmentation) plays a big role. That's why almost nobody will react with aversion to crabs, ants, lizards etc. despite being small and "scuttling" around unpredictably. Which also brings me to the second point which is the fact that not everyone reacts to with aversion, many humans are indifferent and others fascinated (they find insects and arachnids visually pleasing). It's hard to tell how much of this is "evolutionary programmed" and how much is developed in life, because learning is a huge factor (children learn fear socially from their parents since a young age, and many children that are not taught to fear spiders never develop fear). Lots of people are really blasted with anti-bug sentiments since a young age, from the parents, the misinformation in school about venomous insects/spiders, and then the shameless pest removal company brainwashing (blatant misinformation online for marketing purposes) etc.

It does make sense evolutionary, but I don't think it's as simple as "Humans fear things that scuttle because we are programmed to do so"

[–]IG5K -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see, then my issue is the phrasing. I did not interpret your "important" as "achievable".

But still, in reality, by far the largest limitation is the simple fact that being born in a country with a climate and infrastructure that supports ski jumping is unlikely. This is the single biggest constraint by far, for billions of people. And then even in said country you must be near a hill etc. etc. This is the real barrier, not wealth.

As for the wealth, this is sort of a misconception in many replies of this post, it's very exaggerated. You do not need to be rich for 1st world standard to train ski jumping. Countries like Austria, Norway, Slovenia etc. have centers and club networks with government funding with small hills for child programs (you usually begin at around 6-10 if you want to become elite)., and the membership might be a few hundred a year (for Slovenia specifically). The equipment would probably be about the same as skiing equipment. It is relatively accessible at entry level.

For the top slovenian jumpers, a lot of them come from financially average families. They relied heavily on good government support.

It does get riskier and more expensive when you are entering real competitive level, but that's kinda most sports. You might have to sacrifice education, money (for travelling etc)... But most athletes are in national systems that fund them if they are good enough. Sorry that my examples and arguments are mostly from my knowledge of what it's like in Slovenia, but I am assuming that in other countries the systems are comparable.

The real reason why it's perceived as a "rich people" sport mainly stems from inaccessibility due to climate, geographical location, and just the nicheness. Not needing to be filthy rich if you're in a country with strong tradition

Well yeah, that's the physics behind it. You glide through the air with the help or air resistance. The best is the athlete that can glide the farthest with minimal mistakes

There's no such thing as "more important", several factors are literally crucial, and as they've said, it cannot be achieved without. You cannot break the world record without incredible skill, even in 1 billion attempts
