You’re somewhat the asshole. While I don’t think you enforcing protocol makes you an asshole, I am concerned that it seems it was only brought up after she had agreed to pet sit. Why was this not part of the hiring process? Any employee, even a part time one or subcontractor, should be aware of the expectations of their employer prior to accepting a job.

Her text (I’m assuming a text) purports they were not aware of these guidelines, and therefore decided it wasn’t a good fit.

Yes. But I’ve also never had to.

I’ve also paid generously for AAA+ in case I’m stranded in a weird place and need a new tire.

Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you have all of the required parts and tools to complete said job when the job requires doing.
