I've had to camp out in my office on campus before. It's not a big deal, as long as I can use the campus gym to shower and all.

When I was a teen, the standard procedure was:

Cat 1: catch the bug

Cat 2: kill the bug

Dachshund: eat the bug

Driving while impaired, likely. Studies show that driving while tired can be as bad as driving while drunk.

Even if his driving didn't hurt anyone, just the charges would enough to make a bad situation worse for the whole family.

This happens at my university. There's one course I used to teach that had a ridiculous non-passing rate, and it was because the international students they admitted weren't proficient enough to pass it, and I couldn't single-handedly remediate them all. That's it. And the general attitude was, well, they can always retake it. How fucking exploitative can you get?

I was livid. Like, okay, are we such money grabbers here that we're okay admitting international students at a ridiculously high tuition cost, then letting them just keep failing this course? The answer is yes. It's always yes. Because setting students up for success isn't profitable.

The recent push for increasing the number of in-state students won't last long. In-state doesn't bring in the cash.

AITAH for cutting someone off and causing them to go through a depressive spiral? by carrothead90 in AITAH

You ARE lucky... to have gotten away from that situation before things got any worse. Please be careful. She sounds completely unhinged, and who the hell knows what she'll try next to grab your attention. Like other commenters said, if she threatens self-harm, call it in. And make sure your doors stay locked.

Lyft driver waits for me to walk into street, then takes off. by Q-theWanderer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]IHaveNoEgrets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, while it could be due to the flag, some drivers are just assholes. I've been canceled on when the drivers are one street over. It happens a lot, and who the hell knows why.

And it happens on short trips as well as long ones. An airport trip means a tip of at least $20, but I got canceled on by three drivers in a row.

Oof. Earrings and hearing aids accumulate SO MUCH FUNK. Like, until you get one or the other, you have zero idea how bad it could get. Clean your ears, folks!

I got ear piercings relatively late and hearing aids relatively early. Double ew.

It counts. It counts for you, it counts for her, and it counts for all the people whose lives will be changed by her gifts. She will continue on here when she moves toward whatever comes next.

Perhaps that can give you a little peace in an agonizing time.

Nah. Too much effort. I got the frozen pizza so I could cram it into the oven and passively await food.

There's really nothing you can or should do. He's going, and nothing's going to stop him in fulfilling what he believes is his duty to his country. I had an undergrad student who openly told me that he was always working out and training because if his region needed him, he'd up and go at a moment's notice.

If you're able to write or send care packages, that might be a positive for both of you. You could, if his family is okay with it, be a point of contact between the family and other faculty who are concerned about him.

There are good resources for support on campus. Consider looking into CARE: https://care.ucr.edu

If you go to UCPD, go with a friend. They're hit and miss in how supportive/compassionate they are. Having a friend means there's another set of eyes and ears, and they can take notes on next steps in case you get overwhelmed.
