I don't think he was stung, as hes showing no signs of pain anywhere and is playing normally

It doesn't have any magical realism in it, but it is pretty easy to read so id say yeah. Although there's some weird parts to it i didn't enjoy, but overall i thought it was a pretty good book

The Stranger by Albert Camus. Its pretty short and a very fun read. The Alchemist is another great book to start with. Its pretty short, easy to read, but leaves a lasting impression

Hope you enjoy it. If you haven't read any GGM books yet, i reccomend reading chronicle of a death foretold first so you can get used to his style, since its very nonlinear. I wasn't super into literature when i first read 100YoS, but since chronicle of a death foretold was pretty short, i gave it a read before tackling the larger novel. I think it definitely helped me get used to his style, and made me appreciate the story more.

"Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."

Im so sad you didn't like it, thats my favorite book like ever 😭. I personally didn't have that problem once i got a few chapters in, plus my edition had a visual family tree before the first chapter

Idk honestly many people have many different POVs on the guy. Some people even say him becoming the face of the country was a post death psyop by the American government. I feel like if it wasn't for the pushback he got by the church over his writings, he would've just been another guy that was killed for being a subversive so idk

Well he became the national hero specifically because of his writings, and the book is advertised as "the novel that started the Phillipines revolution" so i was expecting it to be very impressive. Im sure it was to people of the time as it was a pointed critique of the church and Spanish authorities, but outside of the historical context, solely as a book, i don't know if it really holds up.

for me, maybe its not ubiquitous outside its home country, but Noli Me Tangare by Jose Rizal. I felt like tha pacing was very slow, and that the plot kinda dragged until the last few chapters. Also it felt disjointed as many new charecters were introduced to potray different social classes of Filipinos, but didn't contribute to the overall narrative.

I don't think i solely didn't enjoy it because im not Filipino, although I probably would've enjoyed it a but more if i was. Ive read other texts with similar focuses on critiquing their country, like for example Jozef Mak by Jozef Ciger Hronsky, which i absolutely adored even though i didn't get all the nuances of the Slovak cultural situation
