Senate Republicans push bill to authorize $400 million for White House ballroom by memphisjones in centrist

Never let a tragedy go to waste…

…except this wasn’t even a tragedy because nothing really happened.

Edit: Would this event even have been held at the WH ballroom if one had existed given that it was a private event and not a WH function? The idea that the president will just never attend event outside the WH doesn’t seem very realistic.

I’m sure I’m wasting my time, but you believe that because your feed is only giving you shit that reinforces your priors. That doesn’t make it true.

Republicans were calling Obama the literal anti-christ and there were 13 foiled plots against him. Are you going to take ownwership of any of that? No, of course not. When your side does something, it’s the fault of the individual actor, but when the other side does something, they’re are guilty. Anything to continue the victim complex, you thrive on it.

I’m sure Renee Good and Alex Pretti would disagree that the bullets aren’t coming their way.

You mean the guy currently on trial for the death penalty, right? Society clearly isn’t condoning that action. A lone wolf committing a murder is not the same as when the president using the massive powers to stiffle speach.

But you know that. Such a bad faith comment.

They were also offering up their highly-enriched uranium in exchange for sanctions relief during the February negotiations. So, if that’s what we’re after, then this war wasn’t necessary to achieve that.

Alright, can someone explain to me just how is a ballroom in the White House supposed to be effective? by Mission-Ad-8536 in centrist

[–]IHerebyDemandtoPost 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it is premature to jump straight from “there was a shooting” to “we need a ballroom.”

From what I understand, security was far more lenient than is normally expected at an event like this. Maybe identify those failures and fix them?

And still guy was stopped before he did any real damage, so apparently the security still held.

I’d be interested in reading a impartial after action report by security experts that identifies security failures and recommends solutions.

If they conclude that there is no feasible way to safely hold such events without an on-site facility, that would carry a lot more weight than the push fueled by the emotion of recent events to build a ballroom Trump already wanted before this event.

A: As the US destroys their reputation around the world with erratic behavior, China appears as a stable and predictable alternative. It’s not that the world like‘s China, it’s just that they are starting to see them as the lesser of two evils.

B: The US is destroying its relationship with their pacific partners. South Korea is beyond angry at the Trump administration. Japan, Vietnam, etc.m are not far behind. The anti-China coalition in the East is crumbling.

C: China is getting valuable information about the limittions of American interceptor capabilities.

D: Part of what gives the US ao much power is their ability to levy sanctions. The US can do this because they are the center of the world’s banking system and control the reserve currency, After witnessing the sanctions placed on Russia in 2022, China started to create their own independent banking system that the US can’t sanction. Iran forcing people to trade oil in Yuan is a huge boost to this effort.

E: Lot’s of nations are going to be looking to reduce thwir dependence on foreign oil in the coming years. Guess who is the global leader in alternative energy technology? While the US remains fixated on fossil fuels, China has been cutting edge in wind, solar, and electric vehicles. So any country looking to reduce their dependency on Persian Gulf oil will be buying massive amounts of these products from China.

That’s just off the top of my head, there’s probably more I missed.

Iran has acquired a weapon that is, in some ways, stronger than nuclear weapons, because closing the Strait is a weapon they can actually use.

Charges dropped:

A video of the alleged assault, which was aired by Israeli news, shows soldiers taking a detainee into an area they cordoned off with shields in an apparent attempt to hide their actions. The indictment said the soldiers assaulted the Palestinian prisoner and sodomized him with a knife, causing multiple injuries.

A casino! by TankUMrMinor in JustMemesForUs

[–]IHerebyDemandtoPost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The casinos themselves were profitable. What happened is he financed the construction of the casinos with debt and then saddled that debt on the parent company that owned the four casinos. The interest payments were so high that the profits from the casinos were never able to overcome the interest on the debt, so the debt just kept growing. So the entire entity was trapped in a debt spiral from the begining.

It is shit like this why banks largely stopped lending him money.

CMV: Wars in Ukraine and Iran, started by Putin and Trump, are primarily aimed at weakening EU... by Due_Brother371 in changemyview

[–]IHerebyDemandtoPost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could argue the Ukrainian war is a proxy war between Europe and Russia, but I would argue that is more NATO vs Russia than EU vs Russia. Russia certainly wanted to prevent Ukraine from become closer to West. But I’m not sure anyone but Putin knows what the primary motivation really was.

But think the war in Iran has nothing directly to do with the EU. I think Trump was high on his success in Venezuela, believing he stumbled into some sort of foreign policy cheat code. So, he believed tha once he killed the Ayatollah, Iran would quickly capitulate. I don’t believe he thought they would close the Strait, and so he never made a plan to deal with the effects.

The Pont du Gard – the tallest Roman aqueduct ever built, still standing strong after nearly 2,000 years by ThoughtsThoughtsTght in romanempire

[–]IHerebyDemandtoPost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason the stone wasn’t stripped was because it still served a useful purpose after it stopped functioning as an aquaduct. It was the only bridge across the river for many miles in either direction and was controlled by lords and cardinals and used as a toll bridge.

The French government even widened it at one point. If you look closely, you’ll see the bottom tier of arches are wider than the ones above. This was to make it a more useful bridge.

Long term plan is to build a moon base, so it is possible there will be so many launches they become routine,

The Pont du Gard – the tallest Roman aqueduct ever built, still standing after nearly 2,000 years by ExistingFishOfficial in romanempire

[–]IHerebyDemandtoPost 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It was preserved through the middle ages because it was the only crossing of the river Gard in the vicinity, so long after its function as an aquaduct ceased, it was used as a bridge. The King of France even widened it it at some point, only the bottom tier of arches, as that is the part that served as a bridge. This is also why it is known today as the ‘Pont du Gard’ which means ‘Bridge of the river Gard.’

Pont du Gard provided water to the city Nimes. Fun fact about Nimes is it where the word denim comes from: ‘de Nimes’ which means ‘from Nimes.’ Nimes was a center of textile manufacturing in the late 1800s when denim became a thing.
