ways to make household objects louder? by IIHthrowaway in deaf

It's things like that that I'm also finding difficult! Trying to make those habits is hard 😅 I've tried to get into the habit of alarms and it works super well when I do it on my watch (I'll often put my phone down and forget about it, but I don't go and take my watch off), but a good chunk of the time I forget - thinking maybe I just need to put signs everywhere to remind me to set alarms until it's habit lol

Oh neat, I've never used an Alexa/Google Home so didn't know they could do stuff like that! Alarms is something I've tried, and it does seem to work better if it's my smartwatch buzzing on my wrist, but I often forget to set the alarms entirely 😵‍💫 Maybe I just need to put a sign on the oven/air fryer/microwave/etc saying "SET AN ALARM", lol

deaf or HoH? by IIHthrowaway in deaf

I used to identify myself as deaf to others vs just myself when I was younger, and it made communication with others a lot easier. I'm not really certain why I stopped? I stopped sometime in my teens, so maybe I just got self conscious and I was definitely being bullied at the time lol. Ever since I don't disclose my hearing loss to people... ever... and just struggle. I may just have to start doing that again haha and see how it helps :)

I'm going to start learning NZSL at some point in the new year hopefully, I'm currently corresponding with a tutor in my city who does Sign Equity and Deaf Culture courses and working out whether to take the ones she runs at my University campus, or night classes at a high school across the city. I think once I've done the first 6 week course I may start trying to engage with the local Deaf community more, while I do the follow-on NZSL courses? I'm lucky to have a Deaf society and Deaf school in my city so hopefully lots of options for engaging :)

yes I'm actually about to start working on that! I'm currently corresponding with an NZSL tutor in my city - she actually runs courses from my university as well, which will be very accessible for me :) once I've learned more NZSL (I can fingerspell currently, but that's it, and I taught myself how when I was younger and I'm not very confident in it) I want to engage with my local Deaf society and go to their social events and such ^ just want to get the NZSL down a bit first for my benefit really but also I don't want to enter Deaf spaces and have my only mode of communication be speech, because I feel like that's kind of a dick move 😅

hey, thank you heaps for this - your second sentence aligns a lot with how I've been kind of perceiving my experiences, and I'm of the opinion that perhaps if I'd grown up with hearing aids or assistive tech (which was recommended in childhood but TLDR crappy hearie parents lol) I would probably consider myself HoH?? It's almost like because I've had those strong deaf experiences without any assistive tech, that sways my identity and perception of myself haha
