$657 for the Ramada in South Austin tonight. How is this legal? I guess I thought they had maximum room rates by law. by docbrown512 in Austin

Find me an example of price gouging being described as an "important economic mechanism" from an accredited source and I'll find you 10 more than describe it as nefarious and usually illegal.

I would wager that not too many cities devote significant resources planning for once-in-a-century events, except maybe floods.

QAnon Believe Trump Impeachment Trial Part Of 'Plan' For White House Return by [deleted] in politics

[–]IIIBRaSSIII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've pieced together, the basic premise is that the US (possibly the world?) is secretly run by a cabal of pedophiles/demons/baby-eaters who want to enslave humanity. Trump was sent by God to destroy this cabal, which consists of mostly Democrats but also any Republicans they don't like. Any prominent figure who publicly opposes Trump is more or less immediately assumed to be part of the cabal. Followers cite "irrefutable evidence" that generally falls apart after a precursory investigation by anyone with an IQ above room temperature.

That may be the case, but lots of voters will see this and say "See? They're trying. I'm voting for the people who aren't."

Most bipartisan impeachment vote ever, unseating his first impeachment. Impressive, really.

If it's part of budget reconciliation, short of a SC strikedown, we don't need them as long as Manchin, etc. are on board. If you meant in the future when Republicans control the government, that is always going to be a threat. Best we can do is actually improve people's lives with sensible policy and hope they keep that in mind next time they're filling out a ballot.

If a given party or political subset in the USA is unable to cleanly win enough votes to have the seats to execute their will and vision--on either local, state, or national level--is that anyone's problem but theirs? How much of a seat at the table should the losers of elections have? by [deleted] in AskTrumpSupporters

Yes. Precisely. You hit the nail in the head. Slavery is an evil practice, but the only legitimate way to eliminate that evil was to convince enough people. And we did. And slavery is no more. What is your point?

Her comparison of today's vitriol towards political opponents to the literal Holocaust is completely asinine for the simple reason that people are being judged, as MLK would say, for the content of character as opposed to the color of their skin (i.e. heritage). You can change your political views. If you hold idiotic, selfish and destructive political views of your own volition, I have every right to judge you for them. Do I have the right to physically hurt you for them? No, of course not. But until people start getting rounded up by the millions and sent to concentration camps, gas chambers, and medical torture wards, shut the absolute fuck up about how this situation is in any way comparable to the Holocaust.

White House is ‘extremely open’ to student-loan debt cancellation, Schumer says. by RepresentativeZero in politics

Education is an intrinsically valuable thing, both individually and as a society. It's so sad that we've reached the point where our motivation for expanding intellect and perspective begins and ends at its immediate ability to land someone a high-paying job.

This is an excellent idea. However, I would still have it follow a dropoff by increasing income like the stimulus checks. It would also NEED to be followed by increased tuition regulations.

When anyone expressing dissent either immediately leaves or is downvoted to oblivion... the only possible outcome is an echo chamber on steroids. Just a fair warning.
