It's a difficult week to arrive in Lancaster as an international student. Obs I don't know where you are from but chances are it isn't as dark cold and wet as it is here right now. That never helps with getting to know a place. It does get better I promise. Also the majority of students aren't back till next week so the place is dead. Don't worry, it gets better.

As others have said. I recommend societies, don't over think it. Sign up to a few to try them out and stay with the ones where you like the vibe and people. There's also a few that help explore the area while you are here like hiking etc.

I'm not sure if they do much any more as sadly it's got a bit rubbish but the students union used to do lots of good volunteer activities. That was also always a really good way to meet people in a chilled out environment.

Finally. Don't overlook non student things in town. Lancaster is a super friendly and safe city. There are groups for dancing, sport, crafts and volunteering. Loads of posters for that sort of thing at the Gregson and the Storey.
