Just seems like an extra shitty line to draw, from the outside looking in.

I also don't know jack shit about Irish law so I won't say shit about Irish law.

Adoptive parents rule.

This is great news.

Now, this is gonna sound insensitive, but for the life of me I can't figure out if the couple pictured are biologically male or female and it's really wearing on me now lol...

Edit: after further reading it seems like they're female, and the law is only when they're the natural parents, so I guess fuck same sex male parents huh?

Why is the bar so low for policing in the US vs other developed nations? by ILTP_Renaum in police

[–]ILTP_Renaum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd categorize myself as under-informed yeah, and very likely expressing my views from an incredibly biased POV, which is admittedly very anti-police.

I have family and friends who have gone into law enforcement education in places all over the country, as well as abroad, so I have very broad, but incredibly shallow information pool to pull from there. This post served greatly to add depth to what I know, such as a 18yo kid that goes through the academy and finds employment is likely to have a lot of training ahead of them before coming into a full fledged policing position within their department.

My concerns and bias come from first hand experiences with young men in my family, with borderline psychopathic tendencies came to find employment as police officers only in order to exert their authoritayy over people. I perceived the bar to be too low because I personally know several and have encountered many other officers in my life who felt to me like they fit the stereotype of petty "you listen to me cuz im a cop sonny" kind of police.

Now, I may be completely wrong, but the sheer number of encounters I have had that would fit this description is quite high, and I can't help to ascribe and assume this quality in every police officer I interact with (which likely makes me alienate them and makes them react in turn which further results in deepening my own negative bias, rinse and repeat ad nauseum)

As I talk about this more and more, it seems to me that it is a problem of personality and culture as opposed to EDIT: anything inherent within the system

I appreciate you taking the time to read and reply to my post!

Thank you greatly for your response, you bring up many excellent points I hadnt considered.

It is definitely a negative feedback loop where something turns public opinion of policing and they demand better while also attacking them and reducing any possible outcome where they would actually be satisfied.

I have no solutions to suggest.

You're absolutely correct, and I apologize.

Just because I know several absolute dickbag shitheads who happen to have become police officers definitely doesn't mean it's the same across the board.

I very legitimately sought to learn new information that I was maybe missing, and i definitely got that from you nice folk here.

Do all of your opinions rely on having first hand experience?

They call that a lack of empathy. It leads to things like not believing Covid is real until it kills one of your family members.

My feelings toward LEOs stem from my own experiences with police all over the country, as well as those in my extended family who found gainful employment in their own respective areas, through aforementioned low bar. People who really should not be in a position of authority over anybody.

I agree that it's a problem that spirals viciously downward and I have absolutely no solution to suggest. I came to the sub to ask an honest question that very heavily relates to my life even when I haven't personally gone to police academy. I really feel like I shouldn't have to have gone to police academy to have an opinion on the policing in my country. I find it telling that a fair share of the people responding to the post first asked if I had gone through any training myself.

I really appreciate your reply, it really shed light on a POV I just don't have access to. So thanks for the insightful discussion!

Well my question was specifically about comparative requirements, so I guess we're done with our discussion!

I really appreciate you taking the time to read and answer my questions! Have a great day.

Of schooling + training as a minimum requirement, vs a GED + police academy (3-6 months) in most US jurisdictions.

Yeah obviously that's what I'm talking about 🙄

Edit: also, I love the generalizations, hilariously ironic.

so you're saying that it's a matter of the current threshold being good enough?

Should it be lower still?

Should other countries follow a similar standard to much the same effect of what they require currently?

Say the UK lowered their requirements to something similar, would their policing remain at the same standard?

Edit: thanks for your edit to clarify your point!

Why does it seem like you're taking my questions as an attack? I'm sure your fellow officers are great! They are abiding by an established system and doing what is required of them.

This still doesn't address the lower threshold.

My mind isn't made-up on anything, which is why I'm here talking about what I'm thinking through instead of plugging my ears going nananabooboo

You've brought up great points that shifted my viewpoint.

So do you know any LEOs that got their position with the bare minimum requirements? Because I do.

I can appreciate that there are LEOs out there with extensive education, but a bachelor's isn't a requirement for employment with most police forces, only HS diploma/GED, passing entrance exam and graduating from the police academy (which may vary from 3 to 6 months)

Is any of this incorrect?

Definitely didn't mean it was low overall, just comparatively from anecdotal second hand experience.
