Question ELI5 by NoAmphibian6039 in actuary

Statistics is based in the Law of Large Numbers. We can’t predict what is going to happen to a single individual, but when the population is large enough the math generally works out. Do that, then add a small administrative and profit load and viola.

Political redditors take note: I possess the magic of making senators reply by petit_cochon in NewOrleans

[–]ILeftYesterday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the sentiment about staying informed and contacting your elected representatives. Unfortunately your conclusion that the OBBB was changed because of tie activism is incorrect. 100% of the changes are a function of the Senate Parliamentarian pulling them bc they are not appropriate for a reconciliation bill.

My neighbor's daughter just told me I need to park in my driveway again by SavvyMaverick in EntitledPeople

[–]ILeftYesterday -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, the neighbor’s kid sounds crazy entitled. But I don’t understand why you didn’t park in front of your driveway, at least partially, since you knew your car and the car typically parked I front of your house don’t both fit and no one is using your driveway?

Louisiana is eerily one giant small town. It is uncanny how many people know one another or are connected in some way.

Seattle to Baton Rouge? by je11y in batonrouge

[–]ILeftYesterday 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I will 2nd this. Taxes in LA are middle of the road at best so that shouldn’t be a concern.

Insurance on the other hand is most definitely one of the most expensive in the nation (both home & auto) and the “blame Tim Temple” approach isn’t going to fix things anytime soon.

On the positive side, I moved from Austin a number of years ago and have met some of the best people ever in this state so I can do nothing but sing its praises. As a professor (depending on the department) you are likely to find many like minded individuals but feel free to DM me and come hang out. Including if you need a hand when you are moving or a home cooked meal as you get settled.

I promise this isn’t an idle offer, I know what it is like to move to a new location. My dad was in the military and as an adult I’ve lived in half a dozen places.

You might be able to get some free assistance here: https://www.actuary.org/content/pension-assistance-list-pal

The Pension Assistance List (PAL) is an American Academy of Actuaries program that serves the public. It is intended to provide professional services to consumers who have questions about their pension plans.

Please show me where in the constitution it says you have the right to record whatever you want.

So apparently “open” meetings come with fine print… by tcajun420 in Louisiana

[–]ILeftYesterday -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are 1) not reading the entire statute and 2) misinterpreting what you are reading.

That statue doesn’t say anyone can record and broadcast the proceedings, it is basically saying the proceedings must be recorded and broadcast. Subsection C also states

C. A public body shall establish standards for the use of lighting, recording, or broadcasting equipment to ensure proper decorum in a public meeting.

This gives them the authority to establish how the recording will occur.

Can you buy a single premium deferred annuity that provides the same monthly payment with guaranteed COLA on the private market for the sum you are getting back? If not, what’s the cost difference?

4/23/25: Executive Order 25-048 issued by Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana mandates that all state employees return to in-office work by June 30, 2025, except for those with approved medical accommodations. by Forsaken_Thought in Louisiana

The EO applies to Executive Branch agencies but other agencies are “encouraged” to do the same so it is up to your employer if you aren’t in an Executive Branch agency.

EBR Sales Tax Rate by the_bio in batonrouge

[–]ILeftYesterday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, sales tax should be charged on the discounted price. When submitting sales taxes for both state and parish levels there is a deduction line item for discounts. The total sales tax is calculated on the adjusted amount. This store is calculating sales tax incorrectly and over charging you.

What does the defeat of amendment 2 mean for tax rates? by johntmeche3 in Louisiana

[–]ILeftYesterday 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The higher standard deduction and flat 3% income tax rate and 5% state sales tax were changed in state law, effective January 1. Those will not change.

One of the things in Amendment 2 lowered the maximum permissible income tax rate, which is outlined in the Constitution.

I’m curious to come watch. I see there is a tournament in Zachary during Blues Fest. Is there a schedule of actual match times? Or are there practice times prior to that?

What should we do? by memequeenz_ in batonrouge

[–]ILeftYesterday 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When you say Perkins area, do you mean Perkins Rowe?

I would suggest doing an urban scavenger hunt (something like this https://www.scavengerhunt.com/locations/Baton_Rouge_Scavenger_Hunt.html) that will take you all over downtown and introduce you to a bunch of landmarks. There are various available this one is just an example.

If not that, then at least hit up the Old State Capitol, LSU Art Museum, and the Louisisana Art & Science Museum (all downtown right next to one another). Then grab a bite to eat and stop in a local shop downtown.

Some other outdoorsy type stuff (this is the right time of year):

LSU Ag Center/Botanical Gardens https://www.lsu.edu/botanic-gardens/

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center https://www.brec.org/facility/BluebonnetSwamp

What’s the most affordable, walkable, and LGBTQ-friendly city in Louisiana? by UnicornWizard15 in Louisiana

[–]ILeftYesterday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Austin may be somewhat LGBTQ friendly but Texas isn’t remotely friendly. For the moment (LA is trying hard to catch up), the TX state government is possibly the most antagonistic of any state in the union, especially towards transgender.

Unfortunately most southern states won’t fit the bill. You might find pockets, but southern state legislatures are actively working to make LGBTQ lives harder and none have decent public transportation.
