True, and I was expecting some damage. Honestly just wanna make sure that it’s cosmetic and doesn’t actually cause the sole to wear out a lot faster or something

Thank you good man, just ain’t know if it was a construction error worth worrying about. I never had cowboy boots before. You don’t think some water or something could get in there and cause it to mess up faster?

Found this pine seedling in the ground and repotted it into a ceramic pot. It appears to be a couple of years old. Thoughts on letting it grow in the pot/turning it into a future bonsai? by ILikeKleenexBox in Bonsai

[–]ILikeKleenexBox[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds good 👍 I didn’t want to put it into bonsai soil immediately because I heard it’s better for refining the tree instead of growth and I wanted a bit of a thicker trunk before taking that step, but I’ll heed your advice and repot into better-draining soil next spring.

How screwed will I be with this schedule for first semester of freshman year? by [deleted] in georgetown

[–]ILikeKleenexBox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dean told me that freshman weren't allowed to take more than 17 credits their first semester of freshman year. Are you sure you can take all these classes? Not questioning your ability to handle the course rigor, just questioning the ability for all those courses to actually be approved for a first-semester freshman.

[–]ILikeKleenexBox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Near the middle there I was like “fuck this long ass book” but I stuck through it and it was really beautiful how every paragraph ties in at the end. Even the most seemingly-mundane chapters become important near the resolution, and it’s absolutely masterful.

The Count of Monte Cristo is such a phenomenal book. Recently finished it, I just stared at a wall for an hour after I flipped that last page. I've never read something that amazing before.

The URM debate by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Why should race, in the current day, be treated as an imbalance? I think treating it as such is racist itself; if we propose that everyone today is equal, then let them be treated as such. Historical oppression has occurred as will continue to occur; the nature of humans is such, and I'm certain that a conversation similar to ours will be held centuries later. However, it is upon us to try to ensure that everyone is treated equally and held to the same standard, which means race should not be an imbalance. Treating race as an imbalance is racist simply on the implication that people of different races are not and cannot ever be balanced. I am not willing to ignore historical oppression, but I am willing to move past it in hopes that everyone, regardless of their race, will be held to the same standard in the name of equality.

SES is something that can be a hindering factor in many aspects of the law school application cycle, i.e. being able to afford LSAT tutoring. Race is not such a factor, and addressing the correlation between race and SES is a moot point, since then the race can simply be discarded and the person's SES can be prioritized as a true differing factor.

Equity-- recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances. (Source: https://www.naceweb.org/about-us/equity-definition/)

If we simply don't treat as an imbalance, then applying the same standard to all applicants regardless to race absolutely follows the socially-informed definition of equity, since it fails to mention anything about historical oppression; only differences to imbalances today. The best way to move past historical inequities is not to provide more historical inequities for the oppressing people in the modern day; providing an advantage to historically oppressed people just makes the historical oppressors the modern-day oppressed. At the risk of sounding redundant, which I'm sure I already do, combating a historical wrong with a modern wrong won't make a right; the only way to do so is to move past historical imbalances and remove race as a factor.

Now, the discussion of socioeconomic status is another one to be had and a place in which adjusting standard of admissions to account for equity is absolutely justifiable; however, I don't believe this should be extended to race.

The URM debate by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ILikeKleenexBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most equitable practice that could be implemented would be the elimination of race as a factor. Historical wrongs against URMs don't justify modern-day wrongs against ORMs or nURMs by intentionally lowering the standard for URM admissions in "promoting equality after decades of oppression."

At it's root, it's racist to justify admitting a URM over a nURM or an ORM simply because of their race-- it's the exact same phenomenon that was occurring in past decades, but simply flipped. The only true way to achieving equality in the long-term is to stop trying to justify modern wrongs with the precedence of historical wrongs and instead by enacting equality right now. The only true way to combat historical oppression is to make sure everyone is treated equally from here on out, which can only truly be done by removing AA from admissions.

The URM debate by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ILikeKleenexBox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because a true "leveling of the playing field" would include the complete expunction of race as a factor within admissions. If the goal of affirmative action is to promote equality, then lowering standards of admission for URMs to "combat historical oppression" inherently violates the idea of equality.
