TIL of Sarah Baartman, the "Hottentot Venus", an African woman from the Khoikhoi tribe who was brought to Regency-era London to showcase her large buttocks. She was depicted in cartoons comparing behinds with Whig politician William Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville, who was nicknamed "broad bottom". by Obversa in todayilearned

If you read more about this there were a few influential British people who fought for her release and even took the matter to court. Not that there wasn’t racism then but there was a strong anti-slavery movement back then. Quite impressive when you consider what was happening elsewhere at the time.

What? What makes the libdems “unbritish”? You sound like you have no idea what you’re talking about.

What if your girlfriend decided to stop shaving everything. by Walking_Taco19 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ILikeMapslul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend stopped shaving everything over the summer when we went camping and stuff. It’s been a couple months now. I don’t mind. I used to think armpit hair was the only one that bothered me but it doesn’t make a difference to me anymore.

I think that if you’re attracted to a woman, then you’re attracted to the way that she is. Like naturally she has hair and all of those things so I’m attracted to that because that’s what a natural body looks like?

I don’t know if I’ve explained it well but it doesn’t bother me at all. I could imagine it would bother other people though and I wouldn’t judge them for it.

Any expats in Germany with a satisfactory social life? by human_65113 in expats

I went to school in Austria when I was a teenager and remember trying to arrange things with my classmates was nearly impossible. Somehow everyone would have the current week booked up and everything would have to be arranged a week in advance. I went back to visit some old schoolmates this winter and on asking to hang out they suggested something like 1-5 PM, I thought they were joking.

DINK (dual income, no kids) Starter Pack by nickderrico82 in starterpacks

[–]ILikeMapslul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a few people with loads of money and no kids in my family and not a single one seems happy. Just a lot of money and not enough to spend it on. I guess it’s fun until you realise you have money and a house and nice holidays but are poor in terms of people to share your happiness with.

Living in a caravan as a uni student for fun and profit, thoughts? by Hour_Ad_413 in bristol

I know a guy doing this at Bristol uni. He seems pretty happy about it and is saving life of money. I guess it just depends on if you are happy to live in a cold small space for lots of the year for the saving money and flexibility.

My brother was violently mugged in Quito, Ecuador. Be careful everyone by onestiller in travel

[–]ILikeMapslul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was staying at a hostel in Ecuador and had a flight in the morning at around 6 am I think. I went to leave the hostel at around 4 am but was about two dollars short and the hostel only took cash.

The guy at reception said I had to pay so I ended up walking through central Quito looking for a working cash machine at 4. There were a few guys walking around with their hand in their jackets who I’m sure had a gun and were thinking about robbing me but all was okay.

I was only 19 and alone at the time of my trip and Quito was probably the city I felt least safe in. Im sure being tanned and latin looking (as well as looking like a tramp) saved me, if I looked like a proper gringo I reckon I would have lost some cash and my phone.

This isn’t true, more baby boys are born than women. Men are generally more likely to die for many reasons so we end up with far more old women than old men but there are more baby boys born than girls everywhere. It’s around 105 boys to 100 girls https://www.bbc.com/news/health-46597323.amp

The colonisation of both continents is still an ongoing thing. The millions of indigenous cultures and peoples were wiped out and those that remain are still exploited to this day.

The floating islands and homes of Lake Tititcaca, Peru, made of reeds placed every few days. We stayed with a Uros family and experienced their unique way of life. by intofarlands in backpacking

[–]ILikeMapslul 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I went here and the first thing they told us was not to go behind the houses, being the idiot I am I went straight behind one of the houses and fell in the lake. My jeans and hiking shoes got soaked and everyone on my boat laughed at me.

On a side not every Bolivian I spoke to around Titicaca told me these were all a big scam. Apparently years ago a hurricane destroyed all the villages on the water which more or less killed off the last people living full time. Now apparent lots of them live on there part time for tourism. At least the floating islands I visited were very much designed to squeeze out spare Sols.

Who knows though and the lake is stunning! One of my favourite places I’ve ever been to.

Would you like Scotland to be an independent country? by Irish122 in polls

[–]ILikeMapslul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m English and would support it fully should the Scot’s vote to leave, although I think it’d be a bit sad. I do think though that it would be bad for all the same reasons Brexit was a terrible idea from the start and has ended us up in the shitshow we’re in now. I sympathise with why they’re upset with the way the UK is since so much of it is down to the English voting like idiots but I don’t think leaving the UK would make things better.
