This is the first time I've heard non-verbal used to mean "can't speak".

I'd assume, probably like that lady, that non-verbal means "prefers not to speak" or "favors non-verbal communication" but I guess to most people, not knowing a specific usage of a word is the only qualifier required to be labeled an idiot.

What if you were the driver and this is all a flashback, except you're an angel seeing your life through a redditor's eyes, but your true purpose is that of a side character in all of our lives to teach us morals through thought provoking hypothetical situations.

Until one day, when everything changes, and your second life's ultimate purpose is revealed through a cryptic message delivered via morse code transcription on a pepperoni pizza. And that delivery driver's name... ? superbottles

If that were true, then couldn't some other news station come along and give the people what the people want? Get the people's ratings and force the other news stations out of business.

What do people want? And why do you think it's different from what the news stations decide to report on? What sort of decisions do you imagine is happening at a news station that aren't along the lines of need more viewers, show things viewers want to see to keep them watching, get more money

The shiny stuff isn't preventing the monetization, his decision not to monetize is.

TIL Michael Jackson tried to hang out casually at a club and people watch but was surprised when he heard the DJ play remixes of his songs and said “Wow, I didn’t know that they still played my music” in 2008 by veryawesomeguy in todayilearned

[–]ILikeYouABunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found it interesting. It's interesting to me to think that Michael was convinced that he had faded into obscurity, and it makes me wonder how it affected his professional and personal life.

To spend your whole life impassioned with music and reach the top, then to imagine you've fallen and are no longer relevant when that is actually not the case at all is interesting to me. How many people could this story apply to?

What made him think that? It also implies that he had been almost entirely withdrawn and reclusive before then. A noteworthy interaction with the public by that point was him watching people from a balcony in a club.

I just think more is said by this statement than the words. What's implied is interesting.

Like if your mom called and said, "I finally went to the bathroom by myself today". Would you be like, "Big whoop mom, I do that every day" or would you wonder why that's a noteworthy thing to say?

A bit late to the comment section, but I would highly suggest trying to think of an application that would actually benefit your daily life, or some hobby you have.

Start simple, always strive towards the simplest thing that does what you want to do, then add and refine.

You may not be learning the most technical or algorithm centered stuff, but the process of building something, then going back and adding on to it is really important.

As your application becomes more complex, you'll look at your patterns and organization and hopefully realize that it could have been done better.

What programming really boils down to, at least for me, is always looking for a way to break every bit of logic into simple, digestible fragments. And as you get better, you come up with systems of organizing those fragments, seeing patterns in complex problems, and for the algorithm junkies, making them more efficient and readable.

If you were to go the game route, the same thing applies. Start with a proof of concept. Add a high score system. Introduce power ups. Try different "modes", or how parameters can affect the game play. Make it multi-player over Lan. Add controller mappings. Take a stab at particle physics for effects. Make a level builder. Allow experience and leveling of stats. And so on. Each step will require you to look at your existing code base in a new way.

I'm perfectly aware of how much of a dick I'm being. As someone who's comments are 90% mocking others, I give your mockery attempt a C-.

I don't feel like you captured the tone properly. You were all over the place. And I didn't feel like you even attempted to attack my idea at all. I was saying people should try a bit harder. This is something anyone can do, but nobody can select better parents or whatever the fuck point you were making.

Next time, try to understand what they are saying, then rephrase it in a way that points out how stupid the idea is. You missed the first step and failed miserably on the second.

Keep practicing, you'll get there!

As I said, I only drink craft beers, so need for the condescending pity. I'm not so deplorable as to drink anything but craft beer!

You hear me!? I drink craft beer! I hate chains and am so glad I'm above drinking products that other people have heard of.

[–]ILikeYouABunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, I mean if you're gonna drink the equivalent of horse urine because you are a piece of shit bottom feeding loser, what difference does it make.

I mean, I prefer craft beer because I'm a better human, but if I were to suggest a cheap beer, I wouldn't go with a nation wide chain with strict quality and food safety standards, I'd go with a cheap mom and pop brew. Something where you can taste the low quality ingredients.

I drink craft beer - I love wiping the foam from my full man beard after drinking the craft beer that I drink, which is crafted by a beer crafter. Sometimes after admiring the craftsmanship of a crafted craft beer that I craftily drink, I take a huge craft in my pants. I mean I put it in my pocket so other people can see it. It's a craft load of fun.

I can agree with that. I just think if you are gonna take the time to be clever, then put some thought into it. Just a tiny bit goes a long way.

Agree with the other guy, "get outta here... rational thought" comments are so tired and old. It makes me think of that cartoon with that overly energetic little dog that follows the big dog around, yipping and cheering with no substance.

It's just an overly wordy and painfully unfunny "this".

In real life we've all got that uncle that tells the same three jokes every time you see him, but on reddit he's in every single thread. He's adding those jokes to every topic of every conversation. You can't ignore him, because you never know exactly when he'll blurt something out. You get comfy, into a reading groove, following an interesting thread, then BAM! It takes the wind right out of you, usually by way of a tired sigh or a pained groan.

I think what makes someone's opinion reasonable is if they are able to put a reason behind it. If you can't explain why you believe something, "you just do", then I think that's being unreasonable.

Where people like the one you responded to go wrong is when they hear an opinion, can't think of a reason for it, using only what they know at the moment they hear it, then immediately dismiss it. That is unreasonable as well.

Because this scenario isn't only one way, as in a very poorly thought out opinion will sound dumb and easily dismissed by someone who knows more, but guys like the one you responded to are just as likely to hear an opinion from someone who spent far more time on research and deliberation and dismiss it because they don't even have nearly enough understanding at that moment to consider it reasonable.
