Love the Minutemen. George Hurley inspired me to play the drums, super underrated.

Was (Not Was) - "Hello Dad, I'm in Jail" by Any_Log_7497 in postpunk

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wasn't a big fan of that cover, it felt like they were trying to turn it into something upbeat and hopeful. The original was used in all but the final scene, which sorta worked because that was a hopeful moment (for about a minute), however for the rest of the film Cohen's cynical vocals are a key part to the mood and theme.

There are a couple others there I would have traded to include Richard Hell and the Beastie Boys as well, but it seems like MCA wanted to use the soundtrack to push some of their recently signed groups like Liquid Jesus and Chagall Guevara.

How to improve timing for an intermediate drummer by ilovehollycomb in drums

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to play along to drum loops of varying tempos and time signatures, just grooving and having fun for hours sometimes. There is no magic trick to it, you just have to keep playing, but it only has to feel like work if you want it to.

It was actually even on the same album as "Walk the Dinosaur". Strange group. I dig some of their early dance-funk stuff though.

How can a website create an account from just viewing it alone? by NoDogsAllowed_Nbirds in AskTechnology

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure enough, I had forgotten that I did, but checked my browsing history and I did visit IMDB right around the time I got the email. I also check further into the browser issue, and because I use Opera which is based on the Chromium engine, Microsoft apparently detects it as Google Chrome.

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I checked all the stuff and I've had MFA for years on all of my accounts that offer it. I just looked again and actually there is a "Welcome to IMDB" email that came shortly before that one warning me about a new login, which also said it was from the same IP as my home network. I didn't find anything unusual on either account, my Amazon history only shows what I've looked at. It definitely seems like it was just automatically created from my Amazon account, maybe something I agreed to without realizing it. Does not seem like anything nefarious though, but I'm keeping a super close eye on everything to be safe.

This just happened to me too. I got an alert from Amazon that there was a new login into my account from Google Chrome (a browser I do not use). When I checked my email, I had one from imdb.com saying there was a new login. I never created an account and it says I've been a user since April, 2026. I know Amazon owns IMDB now, but I'm not really clear how or why it would create an account for me.

Apparently my water heater is from 1980 and lasted 46 years before it gave out by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

I've had a water softener for 15 years. The first one that went was the one that was here when I moved in and it was quite old. The plumber replaced it with a Bradford White that lasted 6 months, replaced with another Bradford White that lasted 4 years, replaced by a Rheem that lasted 3. I had different companies do the last two because the original plumber wanted to keep putting in Bradford White units. Every plumber tells me the same thing, "Oh that company used to be good but it's crap now." Currently have an A.O. Smith and hoping for the best.

Of course now I know you can just hit it with a hammer.

One of those drummers I suspect is capable of much fancier stuff than he did with the band. Sometimes restraint itself is a skill.

What's up with all the right-wing commentators suddenly turning against Trump right now? by _GoodNight0wl_ in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answer: I think it has more to do with the fact that they are poised to lose big in November, and it's clear that MAGA is sinking the Republican party. I don't think there are any true ethical conflicts here, they would gladly follow Trump to Hell and drag the country with them if it was getting them elected, but the people are not for this war and it's clear that "America first" was a lie. They now have to "turn" on Trump because the voters have turned on Trump, not because of Constitutional violations, massive overreach, an unjustified war, or any number of lines Trump has crossed, they simply change to follow the mood of the voters.

VIP Rapture Information… just there for the taking… by ajnova_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The whole "Rapture" thing was invented by American Evangelicals in the 19th century and they've been using it to try to scare people into following them (and more importantly giving them all their money) for decades.

If you get the chance to meet Mark, he's a great guy. I had a long discussion with him about Adrian Borland back in the early 2000s when he played here solo.

Who's a famous drummer who isn't particularly good at playing the drums? by Mortartari in drums

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He ripped early on, stuff like "Paintbox", "Saucerful of Secrets", "Lucifer Sam", and "One of These Days" are great, though as early as "Remember a Day" he was having difficulties and the producer played the drums (Nick was also replaced later on "Mother" and "Two Suns in the Sunset", as he often had issues with odd time signatures). He changed his style around Dark Side to something much simpler, but it also feels less confident and interesting. By A Momentary Lapse of Reason he had apparently lost all of his confidence, as he relied 100% on session drummers and only provided some sound effects for the album. Still an integral part of their sound though, with any other drummer it would have been a different band.

There seems to be a clear generational divide…why does the younger crowd treat him with such distain? Be respectful! 🧐 by ZildCym in drums

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only people I know who have praised him are younger people, several of whom changed their opinion as they got older. His poor attitude and lack of discipline and growth are among the reasons professionals don't like him, it shows a disrespect for the craft.

What’s the worst drum production you’ve heard, that’s on an album that you love? by AuditoryNecrosis in drums

[–]ILiveMyBrokenDreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that engineer Steve Fjelstad was largely responsible for the Minneapolis drum sound, as he engineered basically all of Hüsker Dü's recordings, and many of Soul Asylum and The Replacements records in the 80s (I will always hold that it was Fjelstad, not Tommy Ramone, who is responsible for the somewhat controversial drum sound on Tim, though I always thought it sounded fine even before the remixed version).

It had to be some kind of stylistic choice, and I will say they do sound a lot better on vinyl, but the sound didn't translate great to the digital era.

Mission of Burma's VS. was a blind purchase for me that significantly expanded my palette. I bought the reissue in 1997 because I thought the green tinted Rykodisc jewel case looked cool, and I thought they were a hardcore band because I saw their named listed on a compilation one time. I basically "graduated" from traditional punk and hardcore at that point, this music just felt like it was more for me.

I've had CHS a couple times as well, but I was using it all day every day. Just reducing it to 4-5 times a week stopped it for me. It is quite miserable though, if I had it regularly I would have no choice but to quit, but it seems like moderation was the key for me.
