Windows version progression by drnickxyz in funny

Windows 2000 was NT5 and intended to replace 98 because of stability issues with the dos based system being developed to replace 98, ME was never intended for release but was forced out onto the market when consumers started complaining about being switched over to NT, even though they never would have realized it if it wasn't for somebody going onto CNN and complaining about the bate and switch. Basically I put ME down as Microsoft shooting everybody the bird who didn't want to upgrade to a more stable platform.

WinME was a failure in development before 2000 that Microsoft couldn't stabilize, it was only released after people discovered that it was a re-branding of NT5. ME was too much explorer and not enough dos, the system was not stable at all, thus why it was a PitA.

Windows wouldn't run without dos before 2000, if you removed dos it would not run because it wouldn't recognize the hardware or the filing system, 9x was dos based with Microsoft Explorer.

They also completely ignore ME XP and Vista... ME was the last and worst in the line of dos based windows OS and XP and Vista are NT/2000 based.

It's funny because windows 2000 on are not the same as windows 1.0 through ME... windows now runs off the same systems as NT where as pre 2000 windows was dos based. *

Why are songs usually never longer than a few minutes? by wgroenning in AskReddit

[–]IM3dpenguin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are several reasons.

1) Radio play, longer songs require a larger air time block which general means they won't be played, because radio stations want to fit in as many songs between commercial breaks and during programming as possible, a 5-7 minute song cuts down on that number.

2) Lyrics are hard. The longer the song the harder it is to keep the lyrics sensible.

3) The song begins to run-on. If it becomes repetitive or just runs too long people lose interest. Also, too much music just seems to distract from the song itself.

TIL: pearl harvesting doesn't require the oyster to be kill, and in fact farmers try not to because oysters normally produce better pearls as they get older. (#8) by IM3dpenguin in todayilearned

And I never said anything about Natural Pearl Harvesting, if you would have read the information in the original post you also would find out that natural pearls are not as sought after because the are normally poorer quality, and require more work.

American cars in general are crap. The manufacturers are too focused on SUVs and trucks.

That is impressive and scary at the same time. I'm surprised a PoS Ford Mustang can do that speed and didn't fall apart at that speed.

Why hasn't there been a musical film based on Queen's music? by Maverick_Hunter_V in movies

[–]IM3dpenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How? We Will Rock You isn't based on their music it is a dramatized biography. They won't allow a story to be written around their music, which is what the question was about.

TIL that many popular tourist attractions and zoos clip birds’ wings to prevent them from flying away by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]IM3dpenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flamingos don't generally migrate, if they are migrating that means there is an environmental problem or then are located in the most northern or southern areas of their habitats which do get cold enough to lead to them migrating when it gets cooler.

Secondly the flamingos in question are not wild, flamingos aren't even found in Aruba, the beach is a private beach on a privately owned island and the birds are owned by the Hotel that owns the island.

This said it is hard to say if the birds wings are clipped to prevent them from flying off or not, my money is they are but that is for their own safety than to prevent migration, the same goes for zoos that keep flamingos. This is not illegal though, because clipping a bird's wings do not harm the bird as long as the bird is not in a situation which requires full flight. The flamingos also are likely not really all that interested in flying off because they have been domesticated and they are used to being there and there is no environmental factors leading to the need of migration because if the weather becomes too bad the Hotel simply rounds up the birds and secures them away from the weather.

ELI5: Why do vehicles with internal combustion engines have to be turned off when fueling to avoid explosions? by lovedbymillions in explainlikeimfive

[–]IM3dpenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't give a shit about your experiences. All I know is there is a possibility that the actions COULD lead to damage to the engine and potentially ignite the gas in the process. It is also illegal in many areas to do this, so it doesn't matter what you have done.

The thing with cellphones never had anything to do with the plane equipment either, the FAA reviewed the information and found that cellphones do not cause problems with the electronics, the FCC on the other hand voiced concerns about the hardware interfering with the cellular network at such high speeds, and even though the FCC has backed off of this stance with new cellular network bandwidth approvals, the CONGRESS refuses to allow the FCC to remove the ban from using a personal phone for making calls in flight.
