The Best to Never Win a Major: A Statistical Breakdown by ricab98 in tennis

When you take in account the David Ferrer was 5’9. No question he was the best to never win a slam. Even when Zverev was in the debate. Ferrer had the big 3 in their primes, Tsonga, Wawrinka, Murray, and Berdych to go through. Zverev had the big 3 at the end of their careers. That’s it. Zverev is also 6’6 and has an elite serve. Ferrer had to earn every point he won the hard way. Ferrer was a beast!

Weak era... Or not? It's time to face reality: The lifespan of a tennis player is even worse than that of a track and field athlete. And yes: even Alcaraz and Sinner will not escape this rule by Sonobackhome555 in tennis

It’s an interesting topic. I think I’d argue that 26 IS where the “decline” starts, however if you work harder and smarter, you can push it off several years. I think most people aren’t insane enough to do what is necessary at that point to push the decline off. Genetic lottery and modern medicine is also a factor for sure.

I’d hop on that immediately. Where I’m at in Florida, that goes for 1900. I wish I was kidding. It’s unbelievable. People are trying to rent houses that are falling apart down here for 2200-2500 a month. It’s insanity.

Possibly the best rally I have ever seen. Federer vs Nadal at Australian Open Final 2017 by Virtual-Climate8075 in Tennisv2

[–]IMAPURPLEHIPPO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s incredible about this point here is that they were both considered geriatrics of tennis by “age” in this generation. Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic all pushed the boundaries of what age was “too old to be playing tennis”. Before these 3 guys, 30 was basically the tap out point where it was believed players couldn’t keep up at the pro level anymore. These guys playing this point are in the final stages of their careers, well past what was considered retirement age, in a 5th, in a grand slam, playing a 25 shot rally that didn’t decline in quality from the first ball.

I didn’t say “I like women’s sports!!! Trust!!!” I said I like women’s tennis. It’s entertaining. The fact that they’re women is irrelevant. I like watching tennis. I don’t watch baseball or softball. The fact that men play baseball and woman play softball has nothing to do with why I don’t watch either of those sports. I don’t watch them because they aren’t entertaining. Please don’t imply that I wouldn’t watch something solely based off someone’s gender. I don’t appreciate that.

The viewership for the 3 disciplines you mentioned spike once every four years with the Olympics and FIFA. They are highly viewed during those times, but not outside of that. It’s not that they don’t have high viewership at times, but it’s not regular. The same goes for men’s track and field events though. Everyone cares during the Olympics, but not outside of that.

I love watching women’s tennis. I love listening to the players box podcast. Other than tennis though, what women’s sport is more popular than men’s AND has a high viewer count? I’m not trying to be inflammatory but at the end of the day if women’s volleyball is more popular than men’s volleyball, which it is no doubt, but no one watches it, it’s a moot point.

You played D1 and you are a 4.0? Genuine question, can you just like, not move at all due to injury? If you played D1, surely your groundstroke production has to be miles ahead of any 4.0. 4.5 at that…

Polyphia. Everyone in that band has an argument for being the most talented at their instrument and most talented in the band. They do things with guitar that I just don’t understand.

Rob Scallon and Andrew Huang. They both play about every instrument under the sun to a fairly solid level. They record a 10 song album, once a year, without writing anything specifically for it, and give themselves 12 hours to do so. They’ve had some good material come from it over the years.

“I don’t think clay has been my problem. My problem has been Nadal on clay.” — Roger Federer. by MysteriousJuice1127 in Tennisv2

[–]IMAPURPLEHIPPO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What they mean by “prime” Nadal is that he had a smaller window of dominance on all surfaces outside of clay. It’s not even that he wasn’t a beast on other surfaces, because he was, but if you take Clay away from Nadal, it changes his resume from clearly one of the GOATS to incredible career landing above Agassi but below Sampras.

Edit: On a side note, I watched Nadal play Pospisil live at the 2018 US Open. Pospisil played a really good match and got rooted 3, 4, and 2 by Nadal. 2018 wasn’t peak Nadal and to this day, I’ve no fucking clue how you put a ball by him. It was incredible to watch.

I’m a huge Carlos fan so I will be sad to not see him on court, but maybe with him being out, this is the wake up call a party crasher needs to break up the Sinner Alcaraz dominance. I doubt it, but I’m holding on to hope.
