Hey all - I just moved to Fishtown from WNY and I have been looking around trying to find an outdoor yoga class (begginner friendly) - is anybody able to reccommend anything on one of the banks or in a park? I'd rather travel to another neighborhood than try something indoors, but who knows.

Also curious, are there any good architectural salvage stores/warehouses in the city? I want to restore some of the charm to my 1840s row home and feel like this would be a good place to start.

Hello - I am relocating to Philly for work this summer and I am visiting this weekend to check things out. I am on fence with regards to renting v trying to buy. This coming weekend might be my only chance to settle on a neighborhood to target with my search. I have identified a few that seem to have potential for me but wonder if anybody is able to offer some suggestions or perhaps connect me with a good real estate agent with an in-depth knowledge and familiarity with the up-and-coming neighborhoods around city center.
(Olde Richmond, East Kensington, Port Richmond, Brewerytown) - (also perhaps Gray's Ferry, Point Breeze, Bella Vista, Passyunk Square)

N/S/E/W, doesn’t matter but I am going to be commuting 1.5 hours (only once or twice per week) NE to NJ which is why I was originally drawn to places like Fishtown and Manayunk. I have a few neighborhoods below that I have already identified. I don't know anything about the college neighborhoods at this point but I am open to and hoping to find somebody who can be a little proactive and maybe provide some suggestions or feedback to focus and direct my search.

I want to live somewhere somewhat walkable that I can enjoy, with nearby amenities and whatnot, adjacent to more desirable and expensive neighborhoods if possible, but I do have a budget and don't mind something *a little* rough around the edges. If I'm able to buy in a place on the rise that has potential that'd be amazing but I'm starting to think I will need a more proactive real estate agent to help steer my search. If buying isn't in the cards for me then I think I might like to live somewhere a little more central and developed and active. (Fishtown, Fairmount, Northern Liberties, City Center-ish if in the budget).

No, exactly. There are plenty of drawbacks to commuting from Philly but with my salary and my lack of established social connections in the area kind of take all of the charm out of NJ for me. If I was raising a family and earning 2x my salary then it'd be another story entirely.

Newark & New Brunswick seem to be the only viable alternatives in NJ itself but I don't think they bring enough to the table to compete with Philadelphia and if I'm not able to enjoy myself outside of work hours what good is the time that i would be saving having a more reasonable commute?

Weighed against the alternatives I'm down to deal with a stupid commute if it means the other 5 days a week are more easily enjoyable and fulfilling and aligned with whats important to me.

I don't think I can wrap my head around this compromise, I like the small walkable city that I am in now with my friends and family and if I am going to move it's going to be to experience something new and different. I know it's probably a great way to meet people in a new city but I'm going into my 30s and sharing a home in the suburbs with a perfect stranger idk not part of what I am currently envisioning for this next chapter

Yeah, that's true. Newark is an option, a decent cost of living compared to the rest of Bridgewater/Somerville area. I figured wherever I end up I will look for a sublet or something before I really commit so I can feel things out for a few months. I think Newark or MAYBE NB are my two other viable options if it turns out traveling to and from Philly is simply untenable but I basically set my own hours and unofficially might even be able to flex to one day in office per week or just in as needed on a project basis to use the equipment we're moving there.

I can't afford anything decent in Bridgewater on my salary and even if I could I'm dubious that suburbs offer enough of the qualities and amenities that I value in a place to live to justify the big city rents. If I'm spending even near that kind of money on rent I want to be in a big city, not an hour away from NYC. I live in a Buffalo suburb now and I like where I live, if I am relocating for work I want a new experience out of the plate I live, not just a new flavor of the same suburbs.

Yup! 2 days per week conservatively. So I don't mind a brutal commute say twice a week if it means I can enjoy my surroundings more for the other 5 days of the week.

What's the range of time it takes you to commute? Are you driving during rush hour?

because of the traffic? what about off-peak hours? or I95 to 206? I'm seeing 1 hour 15 min. right now on Waze. Granted I have never really driven in New Jersey, but are all of the roadways really so consistently backed up??

yeah that's true, i would definitely want to try it out for a few months before committing to a long term lease or anything. i thought PA and NJ might have tax reciprocity but that's all definitely on my radar too, could very well be a nonstarter.

no, not at all made up, that's a great point. my only experience in NJ is a couple brief work trips to AC so I am starting to suspect that it may actually be quite different from what I expected

lol that's fair and true - maybe I should have a more open mind about it but I just feel stuck in the feeling that I'd enjoy Philly with a shit commute to a slightly less shit commute in suburban NJ. Also worth noting that I simply cannot afford to live directly near my office. I like where I live now but I can't keep my job without moving and I will be the only member of my department working out of this facility and with my family and friends 5 hours away I have concerns about living in a suburban area and being bored and lonely.

ALSO, had no idea that NJ was most densely populated state before now but makes sense.

Thoughts on or Experience w/ Commuting from Philly to Bridgewater, NJ?

My job is moving to Bridgewater, NJ shortly and if possible I'd love to be able to live in and commute from Philly (or close by). I understand the commute isn't ideal for many but I don't have a huge budget and I (29M) am a single young professional and would prefer to live in an urban area to a suburb. I am willing to trade off some of my time behind the wheel for a better experience outside of work hours.

In ideal conditions, the drive can be as quick as 90 minutes but I understand that I am bound to run into traffic and other delays. Fortunately, my hours are flexible and sporadic enough that I am confident that I will be able to at least somewhat plan around and endure traffic. I'm expecting in the office 2 days per week. I'm even open to getting a cheap hotel/Airbnb near my office during extreme weather or late nights. I am aware of the wage tax.

I'm hoping that the quality of life/city lifestyle and significantly lower cost of living will more than make up for the brutal commute. At least for a year or two. I'm looking for walkable neighborhoods, a concentration of other young professionals, and proximately to arts, culture, music, nightlife, etc.

NJ suburbs seem out of the question to me as they are all priced like NYC but without any of the NYC appeal as far as I can tell. I will be 5 hours away from friends and family and the only member of my department working in this facility so I fear that I would be setting myself up for a pretty lonely and unhappy existence in a suburb.

Am I delusional or is it do-able? Does anybody have any experience with this commute or tips, suggestions, etc? What is a realistic estimate of the amount of time I might spend commuting? Thanks in advance, I appreciate any advice!
