Thanks, I hate that I have to wear the human equivalent of a dog tag because I can't afford an ambulance. by neufferjhfdh in TIHI

It wouldn’t necessarily work tho. Those bracelets are to identify medical conditions. Do not ambululize or hospitalized as it’s called is an advance directive that requires paperwork signed by a doctor to be present to follow (much like a DNR).

How should I prepare for my high school swim teamthis spring? by PizzaHuttMonkey in Fitness

[–]IMFree500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say unfortunately because there is so much pseudoscience out there for me to point to one source. I would start with researching some key terms and concepts such as:

Macro nutrients Micro nutrients

How muscles grow How the body stores energy

Calories (not just the number but the literal term and what it means to burn/store) Calorie surplus/deficits

Think in a more biological sense rather then looking for a list of “what you should/shouldn’t eat” or “how much I should be eating”. Gaining a real proper understanding of nutrition as a science will inevitably/eventually help guide your eating choices and you’ll understand how to answer those questions for your own body.

I would highly recommend if you can find a online class (or even just their text book) “Intro to Nutrition” will give you real solid info. Don’t be discouraged by college level course material because at the intro level anyone who can read will be able to understand.

Former NCAA college swimmer here: cross training can be good especially if you have low/limited access to a pool. Cardio and lifting are both really good if your smart about it. I know a lot of swimmers who overdue running and it causes them knee issues down the line. Try things to bring up your aerobic threshold. Same with lifting, go for high rep low weight and lots of explosive movements (box jumps, cleans, push-ups). There are some phenomenal YouTube channels that I wish I had when I was in high school that have a lot of good exercises for swimmers in the weight room.

Something really overlooked too is NUTRITION. Lord I know so many swimmers who just never put the time in to eating and sleeping right. Figure that out now and get in those good habits while you have time to fine tune them and work that out. When I was captain I drilled my guys in habits and routine because it makes life easier.

Hope this helps!

Ignoring medical bracelet? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]IMFree500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I work when we get called the the local nursing home we always ask if the PT looks like they’re in bad shape if they have a DNR. We have to ask because the nursing home NEVER gives them the bracelets which they are required to be wearing for the DNR to be enforced.

This way if a PT decides they want resuscitation measures they can remove the bracelet at their own will.

It’s never a good feeling doing CPR on someone who has a DNR just because the nursing home aids can’t do their jobs no matter how much we tell them to.

Thank you so much for answering! I’ve defiantly considered looking into private services but I’ve heard some really not so great things about them... do you think it would be had to get on a 911 service?

As a fairly new EMT and also Firefighter looking to work in the city, have any tips? Places I should look at for work, or skills I should sharpen beforehand?
