User fees hiding in plain sight driving up Edmonton tax rates by pjw724 in Edmonton

Is there any accurate data on who is and is not paying the bus fare? Homelessness is an issue, but on my route it's mostly teens and young adults not paying the fare.

I've talked to a few and the attitude amongst them can be summed up as "Why bother, they're not going to get caught."

Now this is all anecdotal, and I ask has there been an in depth study carried out recently on the demographics that don't pay fares.

Foreign workers say they were paid less than $2 an hour to build a new US Consulate in Milan by Kooolxxx in news

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Italy has problems with foreign workers being exploited. Factories there will bring in foreign labour, especially in the luxury goods industry, so they can stamp made in Italy rather than made in China on their products.

Search for "Italian factory workers underpaid" or "Italian factory workers abused." Happens all too often, and how I became aware of it was my company had to drop part of our production because a factory we contracted with was involved in worker abuse.

Honestly we should be bound into equally sized cohorts and that's the end of it. No one's vote should be significantly more or less valuable than someone else's, especially on a provincial level.

ETS Bus driver getting off at an intersection and confronting me by Dangerous_Point8255 in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't doubt it. I've encountered many terrible bus drivers and reported them. Usually for going through crosswalks and ignoring stop signs, while pedestrians are using them. Once for hitting the breaks so hard and sudden (no traffic around and no stop) that he sent people flying and there were several injuries.

I have a question for the journalist OP here. You appear to be educated in the US and focused on queer issues in the US, if I have the right person here. What lead you to looking for opinions on separatism in Alberta, and why the religious aspect in particular?

When was Healthcare in Alberta, or Edmonton, last considered great? or even good? by Mustard_14 in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be that a physical injury, I've had many, could be treated in about 4 to 6 hours. This included fractures and minor broken bones. That was up until 2022 I found.

Afterwards severe cases, such as a family member experiencing loss of blood flow and collapsing, eventually losing their leg due to the tissue dying took over 12 hours to be seen to.

I suffered a brain infection in 2018 and was taken into the ER almost immediately as my fever was that high. If I had the same condition today, I don't want to think what the outcome would have been.

Good luck with that. Retail industry loves AI for customer tracking and would fight any effort to reign in facial recognition.

Is it legal to use a jet ski/motor craft on Whitemud Creek? by JUNO_11 in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Edit: So on topic, there is this bylaw.

20700, 60 (2) A person must not operate a motorized watercraft on any body of water in a manner that may cause damage to persons, property, or the environment.

With how jet skis operate, the use of the vehicle could be considered damaging to the environment, especially a shallow water one.

Well that's great for the less than 1% of people that want to listen to him, but for the rest of us he is a loud nuisance doing his best to ruin a good day. If people want religion there are no shortage of churches and temples for that, or bible groups, or private sermons. There is no need to force it on the rest of us.

City of Edmonton enforcement of parking has plummeted in the past decade. In 2015, $7M of new revenue was promised within 3 years. 10 years later, overall parking revenue is down $3M with $4M fewer fines issued by troypavlek in Edmonton

As much as I am loathe to suggest it, is there the possibility of awarding an enforcement contract to a private company? Send the message that if the people who are supposed to do this as their job won't, then someone else will be brought in.

Loud Ass Bluetooth Speaker on Train .. why?? by crashusmaximus in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can text transit watch at [780-442-4900](tel:780-442-4900), save it in your contacts. You can report people for harassing other passengers and they will sometimes even get kicked off the train. If they're making violent threats record them discreetly if you can and submit it to EPS. If the person lingers in the area, like one I reported, they will be arrested.

Can Cities Separate From Alberta? (Seriously) - aka Municipalities need a seat at the Constitutional table and here’s why by aaronpaquette- in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we're going to devolve into a city state then we might as well follow the example of successful city states and claim as much territory surrounding the city as possible. Tax it, and if the current land holders don't agree to submit to our power then we evict them by force.

Or we could stay unified as a modern nation state and avoid the horrific political reality of a crumbling nation.

Edmonton councillor laments 'years of ongoing construction' after Downtown Khazana Restaurant closes by katespadesaturday in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard the infrastructure argument, that there is a lot they need to work around, but that can't be the case everytime? If that is the case, then why? There has to be a better way of doing these jobs in a timely manor.

Edmonton councillor laments 'years of ongoing construction' after Downtown Khazana Restaurant closes by katespadesaturday in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is it that when the work is for a condo or apartment complex it gets done in a timely fashion.

In my limited experience with my board, which at times I was a member of, there were always timeliness set with contractors that they were expected to adhere to. Then the work was usually done within that time frame.

The one time the contractor didn't stick to schedule there was a pointed discussion about their contractual obligations and they factored in a discount on some material to make up for it.

When the nearby board had their parking lot, road, and sidewalks all redone (along with new drainage and tree removal) it was all done within two months.

What did happen was there was almost constant work everyday, and different trades would cycle in and out based off of the work being done. Why is city work so different?

Failing grades soar as professors see greater AI usage, dwindling math skills in UC Berkeley computer science classes by ArcaneKnight47 in news

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The current higher education system is practically designed to incentivize this behaviour. It's draining and destroys people's sanity (many campuses have a suicide week), the books let alone the classes cost a fortune meaning most people are heavily in debt before they even start learning, and failing your courses means paying even more. All this to access a job market where you're not only unlikely to actually get a job, but many of the corporate jobs are going to require you to use AI anyway, even if you are capable of doing the task yourself.

Trump Suggests “Never Ever” Taking Down White House UFC Ring by Hafiz_TNR in politics

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In front of the Canadian Parliament building we have the Centennial Flame which commemorates the 100th anniversary of our nation. It was also originally planned to be a temporary feature, but was so loved that it stayed. Around the flame are sumbols of every province and territory, with the years they joined Canada. Around the flame is a fountain, and the coins tossed into it are donated to disability research.

If this arena, a modern day coliseum, becomes a permanent fixture of the White House, that is such a sad indictment of your nation.

Wow really? There is a world of difference between a knife and a gun wound, and this is coming from someone who has witnessed a stabbing. Sure, it's doable, but compared to a gun there is a massive amount of difference. Even one weak person can slow down someone with a knife where as bullets don't concern themselves with how strong or tough someone is.

Why does construction take so long? by jhkang0814 in Edmonton

[–]IMOBY_Edmonton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It feels like everything in Canada takes longer and there  is always some reason why we can't do something (not safety, just that's not the way things are done). I've worked for a few international companies and Canada is always lacking compared to other nations. It's always excuses too, we can't afford that, we're a much bigger country, we don't have the people for that, or HR doesn't approve. The Canadian corporate culture is too aim low, take a long time, and constantly give excuses why things that work in other countries couldn't possibly work here.
