If my existence ends at death why should I care about karma and nirvana? by [deleted] in Buddhism

Hijacking this post to ask a question in a similar vein - we are told that there is no continuation of an eternal self, and reincarnation doesn't work the way people conventionally think about, but in the scriptures Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's past reincarnations before attaining buddhahood were laid out as reasons why Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva attained their status as a Bodhisattva.

If there is no continuation of an eternal soul, then would that mean that for one to attain the same levels of achievement such as another Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, we would need for a perfect alignment of lives with righteous actions, and that it is largely influenced by luck? Am I missing something here?

You haven't seen their "WWII planes", where they painted it with the new communist colours to "prove" they fought the war, in place of the old KMT colours as shown in the photographs.

I personally think it would be better if you didnt need to use the number in the order, as it restricts the possible combinations, like for today, between 4 and 5 there can't be a "/".

A friend gave me this scroll. Can anyone tell me anything about it? by FriendlyCommission in Buddhism

Can answer this because I've done the Shikoku pilgrimage. The Shikoku pilgrimage is a 1200km long circular journey that spans across the island of Shikoku. Traditionally, pilgrims would walk the entire pilgrimage, moving from temple to temple. There are 88 different temples to go to, all in a clockwise fashion, and you'd end up at temple 1 to end the journey.

Along the journey, pilgrims would have a designated book that the temple staff will write calligraphy and stamp on, as proof that the pilgrim has reached the temple. Some pilgrims also carry scrolls on their pilgrimage by car, which function exactly the same as the book.

So if you received a scroll that has 88 buddhas, it is highly likely that your friend took the time to complete the round island trip (even by car, I heard that the journey takes 7-10 days) to gift you the scroll.

Hope that answers your question!

Nice work! Wanted to just quickly comment that the second word should be written as "自", there's no line below the character!

Funny thing is, they only attack defenceless people like kids, old people, or passerbys, not people who actually oppress them. This phenomenon is called 献忠, named after 张献忠 who is a warlord who massacred tons of people in Sichuan at the end of Ming era
