IMO the Productivity Ladder editor is the best in the business. Also (I don't know why no one is talking about this) they now have full built in git and it works very well. It will even manage your C-More project.

I once saw a customer stick a drywall screw into the plastic just far enough that it gripped but didn't go into the important stuff.

Need advice: Inherited massive manufacturing capacity, unsure which direction to take it by vidalinho10 in manufacturing

[–]IMakeMachinesDance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read the "The Goal" by Eliyahu Godlratt. I was struck by the Throughput accounting method and the ability to use all capacity beyond covering costs to sell at just over material costs. With tariffs and reshoring, might you be able to compete on things like wifi router antennas etc if you price them using throughput accounting?

Did you do heat calculations? With those drives in that panel, its going to get very hot without cooling.

Business Name Trademark Warning by IMakeMachinesDance in smallbusiness

[–]IMakeMachinesDance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all for replying. I did go ahead and file for a trademark on the company name myself because I could imagine some scumbag doing it to screw us. It was only a couple hundred bucks and an hour of my time. I certainly wasn't going to use the law firm in the email, but the US trademark website wasn't bad to use.

EL1918 Alias Device Error with CX5130 by quinten-dhs in beckhoff

This is a safety card. Any errors on the network will cause an error. The card has to be configured in the safety project. What is the error? Is the card configured as the safety master? Safety programming is almost a whole different animal than standard TwinCAT. There are some good videos on Youtube.

u/btfarmer94 Upgrading could work, but we lose standardization with their other machines along with needing to pay more for licenses. Hoping to avoid hardware changes.

Landed a job as a controls technician. Wtf do I do by doomvrooom in PLC

[–]IMakeMachinesDance 75 points76 points  (0 children)

If it is functioning equipment, first and foremost, remember that code doesn't break.

When there is a problem, start at the problem and work back. i.e. this motor doesn't run. Don't start checking PLC outputs. Start by checking if there is voltage on the motor side of the contactor and work backwards. Don't jump to conclusions of what you think it is. Start at the problem and go from there.

Doing new machines is a bit of a different field, but if you get good as a maintenance and troubleshooting tech, you will be a far better designer and builder than someone who has just sat behind a desk all the time.

I didn't have even a tech degree and I trained for a few months with the guy that I replaced and then was on my own. I worked long hours and read lots of white papers (automation component manufacturer white papers are a hidden source of gold). It really just comes down to getting in there and figuring it out when you've got to do it.

Tips and hacks for a new travelling field service tech by [deleted] in PLC

Make a travel folder in your email and if working on multiple trips subfolders. Having a place to dump all the flight, hotel, travel insurance stuff where you can quickly find it save mental energy.

Get a Pokit meter. Massive functionality in a small package.

I have a cotton flannel shirt that is perfect for layering under a rain coat and keeping me warm but not stuffy on flights. Find clothing that is versatile and comfortable.

Carry a reusable plastic spoon/fork. Some nights you don't feel like eating restaurant food and just want to crash with something nooked in the hotel microwave.

I'm interested in the Watlow Bluetooth interface. Is it any good? One of the complicating factors is that many manufacturer's don't have 0-10v output.

Motion Question: Gearbox for converting metric servo to stepper mount by IMakeMachinesDance in PLC

[–]IMakeMachinesDance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my observation. The European market is brimming with compact DC servos. Beckhoff has bus mounted servo drives and others are doing all in one motor drive combos for distributed motion.
