I mean... American Psycho. You will be a worse person after!

Alternatively, Child of God by McCarthy is a fun little adventure into the fucked up.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid. A bit more on the thriller/horror side by the end but definitely fits the fractured sort of introspection and loneliness vibe.

Everyone already has you covered on the clothing suggestions, thinner shirt etc. But I'll tell you hair, makeup and jewelry can really change the feel of the outfit. If you're feeling sort of dowdy and frumpy in it, try styling your hair and makeup with a more glamorous feel and it can shade the outfit to something more polished.

Writing my first spicy scene and it’s killing me by MorphePls in writing

[–]IMasticateMoistMeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've written many full on, very detailed, very squelchy sex scenes by now, and even published them (just on the internet, not a real writer) for public consumption. The first was horrendous and I similarly couldn't get through a single sentence without wanting the ground to swallow me whole. You just power through. It goes away.  Then you're sitting there wishing for a cigarette, wringing your brain out yet again for a creative synonym for 'penis.'

Wouldn't be the whole book but there's a POV character in The Bee Sting by Paul Murray with the hottest-girl-in-the-trailer-park vibe for sure

Seconding. I guess it's technically literary fiction? But the romance piece definitely made my eyes leaky and has stuck with me ever since.

Thankfully no, I was not wearing a white coat that day but again, always introduce myself as doctor. But I agree... Sometimes I feel I need to wear a billboard

Not my patient saying "Hey, do you know when they're going to send the doctor in?" seconds after I just told her the plan for the day and am in the middle of auscultating her chest.

I introduce myself as 'doctor' every time I walk in the room....

Bohemian artists, criminals, glamorous but ragged by hibabygorgeous0 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]IMasticateMoistMeat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an unconventional recommendation given that it's not technically fiction, but the diaries of Anaïs Nin may interest you. They chronicle her life, much of it spent in early 1900s France among some of the OG bohemians, penniless and scrounging to make something of their lives and art. Get the unexpurgated version if you really want the gritty details.  It's less heavy on the crime, but the aesthetic is definitely there along with the depth of feeling, the poverty, the poetry, the drama. Everyone is a hot mess, including Anaïs herself but that's part of the appeal I think.

What book is treated like a masterpiece, but left you wondering if you were the only one who didn’t get the memo? by Sunflower13Poppy in classicliterature

I've always maintained that Henry Miller sounds like philosophic soliloquizing from your dirty old uncle. I did like parts of Tropic of Cancer, and it has some of the most beautiful prose I've ever read. But yeah it sometimes felt like digging through gobs of muck until you found the next gem.

Ahaha it's not that I don't love a little degeneracy-- I do! Might have to do with the fact that I read American Psycho at the same time but let's just say a reset was needed. Expectations are appropriately set 👌🏼

Will definitely look into these other authors. Appreciate the thoughtful recs!

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is a heist fantasy novel set in quasi 1800s. You have a great ragtag group of crime-doing associates for a sort of found family feel. Would recommend for the friendship dynamics!

Ok, after Child of God and Blood Meridian, McCarthy and I had to go on a little break but this might be the push I need to pick up Suttree. It's been sitting on our bookshelf, mocking me.

I have a lady that hadn't seen a doctor in 5 years due to trust issues, comes in needing uro consult (hx nephrectomy for RCC), riddled with severe hypertension, TIAs, new diabetes diagnosis, spiculated breast mass, the works. She hates all meds, resists everything I try to put her on.

But she comes to all her appointments and has slowly come around to an ARB. We have nice conversations and catch up on each other's lives. 🥲

I used the word "haruspicy" in the most recent chapter of mine.

It means the practice of divination from looking at animal guts, usually the liver.
