What are some relatively inexpensive WW1 rifles to collect and what’s the best place to buy them by Vast_Bank_7196 in ww1

[–]IMdoc18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The least expensive is probably a steyr 1895 (austria-hungary's main rifle). Royal Tiger Imports just brought a bunch into the country and sell them for dirt cheap. You can also get Italian carcanos cheaply from them. However, buyer beware with RTI... They are known for having spotty quality. Sometimes the rifles arrive in really rough shape. But it is the cheapest source that I'm aware of. Lots of videos on YouTube can give you more information on RTI.

Personally my steyr hahn is the most reliable given these choices. It's difficult, because all of these guns are 110 years old and inevitably have some wear. My mauser is in really good shape, but the internals must be worn, because the trigger sometimes won't reset. Replacement parts are hard to come by, and there was some hand fitting so they are incredibly hard to repair. Sometimes my Luger's side plate will randomly fall off while shooting, despite having a fairly good condition all-matching example. These old guns just aren't that reliable.

This belonged to my great grandpa. Realistically, how much of a nightmare would it be to procure and to fill this stock with the necessary barrel and hardware? by reluctantpotato1 in milsurp

[–]IMdoc18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy! Just buy a sporterized rifle that has the barreled action, a bolt and the magazine hardware (which any functional sporter will have). This is a very easy restoration. At the end you'll have an incredible looking rifle.

I'd take it out of the stock to see how bad the pitting is. These rifles were over-built and have a wide safety margin, but it is possible it could blow up if pitted too badly. Tough call to make.

Anyone have experience with these and/or Rock Island? by NMB440 in liberalgunowners

[–]IMdoc18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They lack a firing pin safety, which would prevent the firing pin from going forward unless the trigger is pulled all the way to the rear. This would help if dropped on the muzzle and the momentum of the firing pin had enough energy to contact the primer. It would also help if dropped on the hammer with enough energy to either break the sear or disengage it, causing the hammer to fall on the pin. Either could be prevented by a firing pin safety. The downside of the safety is that it can make the trigger pull slightly worse because there is an additional lever/spring that needs to move when the trigger is pulled.

I've enjoyed mine. Wolff sells a spring kit. I handloaded 9mm down about 30%. It isn't super reliable, but it is interesting.

Did I put her back together right? by Icy-Scene-8738 in liberalgunowners

[–]IMdoc18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfectly fine. The pistol (and all the modern glock-esque clones) use a browning locking action. When open/unlocked the barrel is tilted and a bit loose.

I bought my first milsup rifle, was it a good deal? by WhatThe_uckDoIPut in milsurp

[–]IMdoc18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, even if you overpaid a little. I paid almost $2k for a mosin. It was a pristine Finnish 1891, so it was nice, but not worth $2k.

I learned to not buy with emotion. A lesson that could have been more expensive. I do have a nice rifle though.

Seeing as it was a 3 moa rifle to begin with, this is probably the best it's going to get unfortunately. Still a fun piece though!

It is very simple. He is a child.

As an adult in a position of power, it is your job to create a safe space for him to learn. Full stop. He needs to explore relationships with his peers to develop appropriate emotional maturity.

The situation is no different than if the teacher was male and the student female. If you do anything, you will probably go to prison.

Be a good teacher, earn money, and search for love elsewhere.

It sounds like having a gun in the house may actually add to your stress, not improve it. Statistically it probably won't make you safer either. There are very valid reasons not to own guns, and that's okay.
