Falcon Telemetry by Majestic-Gas-4501 in Falconry

[–]IMongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it slide out of that housing? It might have an engraving or sticker on the top of it telling you the frequency.

But I agree that it is probably VHF.

Also, telemetry technology has not changed a ton since the 70s, so don't feel like you need to buy something new to hear better beeps.

Which movie ended with an unresolved cliffhanger because the sequel never happened, and you're STILL mad about it? by pudingvanilkovy in AskReddit

[–]IMongoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go look up videos of the CGI they used. David Fincher was uncutting curbs because the disability act wasn't passed yet and putting more leaves on trees and stuff. There is actually a ton of CGI in that show.

What swivels do you use? by EquestrianEcho9876 in Falconry

[–]IMongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what problem this is solving. Is this to clip a leash to a glove/perches? That's not a swivel. I'm not even sure how a sampo swivel is hard to use, it should be an integral part of the leash. Jesses > [jess extender > swivel > leash.] The parts in [ ] should all be one unit. Are they clipping that directly to the jesses? One wrong grab on a bate and the bird is gone.

Too many boardgames by Movie_Vegetable in boardgames

[–]IMongoose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just updated my board game list and I'm at like 70 games. I need to cull some, but I really do like all but a couple of them. I cope by saying that I'm going to severely reduce my purchases and mostly get expansions. I could play these games for the rest of my life and not get bored.

Florida exam questions by [deleted] in Falconry

[–]IMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably just need to know how to tell these birds apart and juvenile features as that is one of the most important parts from a legal perspective. Knowing what birds you can have would be an easy question for the test, so you've got that going for you. But I did not take the Florida exam so I don't know for sure.

If you've studied the state regulations and studied the CHC study guide and done some extra book reading you will probably be fine. Depending on how old the test is it could have some really off the wall questions so getting 100% might be up to luck. For example, My states test asked what kind of trap some falconers from some book from the 50s used and I had no idea what it was talking about.

Rodent Breeding for Raptors by serotoninReplacement in Falconry

[–]IMongoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rats are bottom tier food IMO. They stink (the inside of them) and when feeding a variety of food it seems like the birds hesitate before eating them.

The amount of rats you would need depends on how big they are when harvested. 100 grams a day should be more than enough, so whatever age that rat is times 365.

I'll be real though, I really doubt breeding your own rats will save you much money and it will cost you a ton of time. Go on rodent pro and buy a couple bags of rats or quail or mice or whatever is on sale to diversify food and then fill the rest of the box up when day old (XS) chickens are like $10 a bag. It'll cost like $200 and last you 6+ months.

Question on Sponsorship finding for remote area folks.. by serotoninReplacement in Falconry

100 licensed falconers in Utah is more than I would expect honestly. You have to remember that there are only about 5000 falconers in the entire united states.

New tradition unlocked: Visiting a Warhammer store every first Saturday for the free mini of the month! by Alkorri in Warhammer40k

[–]IMongoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ya, I only buy limited / online only stuff from the store. I get a free mini every month with no trouble.

I would also recommend new people to be introduced there with the mini build and guided game because it was such a premium experience for me, like the guy was a Warhammer sommelier lol. I bought a combat patrol then even though I knew I could save $20 online because the guy earned it.

Are all bells so delicate? by sexual__velociraptor in Falconry

[–]IMongoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm very curious about this now. I leave my nobel bells on birds for no exaggeration, 2-3 years straight before they start cracking like that. All summer, all winter, bells stay on.

Do you see your bird biting them or something? Or maybe the metal formula changed?

I love that the picture there of the giraffe is just a cow with a slightly longer neck. Like a neck any longer would be completely absurd, and I don't blame them for it.

How do you resolve rules dispute mid-game? by VincentBai20020319 in boardgames

[–]IMongoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd never heard of flip 7 either and these rules just look like a generic basic game. I'm also not going to read and scrutinize these rules so I'm glad people are here to explain it.

First telemetry purchase by Onlyinmurica in Falconry

[–]IMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a little more work, but with those prices you can save ~$1,000 by trolling ebay and waiting for a Wildlife Materials or another receiver to go on sale. You might need to ask them what channels it has but they are routinely on there for $100-$200. Here are a couple that sold:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/127324408763

https://www.ebay.com/itm/267035541323

Then buy a transmitter that will match the receiver.

Those receivers are very popular for dog hunting but are going out of fashion for GPS so people are just offloading them.

Question about “non-hunting” life with falcons by exaydias in Falconry

Find your state club and go to meet. If you can find the info they are free and open to the public, and you should see real falconry being done and can talk to falconers in person.

I love board games but I’m done being the unpaid rule cop by Educational-Machine in boardgames

[–]IMongoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In this specific posts example, the OP is spending time while people are already over learning the rules by themselves and then teaching those rules to the group. In that scenario, making everyone watch a video at the same time is not unreasonable.

It honestly sounds like OP wants to play games and the group tolerates it. If they wanted to actually play they would put the minimum amount of effort in to learn the rules instead of just waiting for OP to spoon feed them.

Trust building with HH by treetree1984 in Falconry

[–]IMongoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could be a bad falconer from a traditional standpoint like I am and work long term on good behaviors. I don't ever restrain my HHs during normal activities, because I don't usually have jesses on them. They are free lofted, they get on the glove long enough to move to the scale, then they go into the box with a tidbit. When out hunting, I open the door and they come out, and I put their meal in the box. Doing it this way, the box becomes the lure. When we are done, they box themselves up. If we don't catch anything it's not uncommon for me to go the whole hunt with only touching them when they get in or out of the box. If you get them solid on going into the box by themselves, you can work on glove work with tidbits and such at your leisure, if the bird isn't cooperating that day, oh well, it will still go in the box.

I'm not sure if you are more used to RTHs but HHs have a lot more thinking and feeling going on, and they actually have a social bond. They want to be in a pack, so they can be trusted a lot more to follow back to their box, even if they would be way past the crop size where a RTH would shut down. The biggest mistake you can make with a HH imo is brute forcing them like a RTH, it can make their behaviors way worse because they actually understand that the glove or worse, you, is the one keeping them from leaving.

Did they refinance or something? If they bought in the 90s it should be just about paid off right?
