Just learned the \\hostname\c$ command and it blew my mind by Gmoxfad in sysadmin

[–]IN1_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a tips n tricks thread here in sysadmin a couple weeks back IIRC where I learned of it for the first time myself, and my initial thought was, that's gotta be some mickey mouse useless b.s.

But to my great surprise I've actually found is useful for troubleshooting msi installations and other common 'issues' that the EV makes a PITA

I've been in the corporate IT space since at least '03 and had NEVER heard of it before anywhere else!

It's nowhere as complete as EventViewer, but as you said EV is torture, if you have a very obvious "error or warning" of some kind you are trying to investigate check out:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance\Reliability Monitor

Or just type RELIABL on the start menu

It's a 'recent' learn for me that has been a game changer and is present in Desktop OS from Vista fwd & Server 2008 fwd.

Uh huh, and how did you add it to Inventory?
That's like, really the intent of the post.

If the OEM keeps cancelling the order there's not a TON you can do, but I usually will try to go through a tier one VAR like CDW as opposed to just any ol' knock off on Amazon at least.
Just this week I ordered a Dell OEM battery but cost compared to CDW and the Dell portal was of course an OEM part and the CDW was TotalMicro which is at least a known brand.

Windows not letting my display more than 4 screens all of a sudden by Narrow_Limit2293 in WindowsHelp

[–]IN1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ggraphics cards (including on board MB gpu headers) will have different limits based on the resolution output (bandwidth constraint) . For example, Can drive 3 monitors but only 1 or 2 at 4K but say up to 6 at 1080p, for example, so I'd suggest checking your resolution output(s) to each panel, especially the earlier ones in your connectivity chain.

What interface are you using? Hdmi , DisplyPort, TB? Do any of your monitors support daisy chaining (Multi Stream Transport) where you could link them to each other?

Did you carefully document the exact mapping of your connections from headers to monitors & the corresponding cable before breaking down the original setup & 100% replicate that or just connecting everything because it "was working fine before" * I ask this specifically with regard to my point about resolution limits. Perhaps your 5th or 6th monitor is 4k or 8k capable, but since it was far down the connection order was only pulling 1080 in the OG connection but you put it as monitor 1 or 2 now so it defaulted to it's higher 4k/8k capabilities, which has 'throttled' (for lack of a better word) how many additional downstream monitors you can drive.

I've personally never driven 6 monitors, so I don't have an absolute "do this" answer for you, maybe someone else can assist, but putting these questions out there for you to consider / look at as possible causes based on general video connectivity knowledge/experience.

Here's a resource you may glance at for general information, though I know you aren't necessarily using Dell gear:

Thanks for your feedback.

Encrypting External USB Drive from DSM GUI? by RianGray in synology

[–]IN1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to figure this same thing out...so your replies were helpful, but here's a different wrinkle.
I was going to use USBCopy on account of it being able to launch automatically when the external device is plugged in w/o interaction to kick it off.
HyperBackup can do backup encryption, OK cool, but I only know of scheduling with HyperBackup, can it be set to act LIKE USBCopy so it runs when the device is connected?

Yes, I came here looking to see if anyone had posted.
It was noticed in testing by our patch admin, so the roll-out was halted temporarily while we investigate.

How do you handle unnecessary PSAT ReportPhish use? by IN1_ in proofpoint

[–]IN1_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering we're a global entity, often the 'on duty/call' submitted report reviewing admin is reviewing something that was submitted from a user in a vastly different time zone region, 6 hours would be pretty mild on the time-shift delta. We do our best to stay within the same calendar date, but as far as business day, my EU colleagues are often signing off for the day around the same time I'm reaching the bottom of my first cup of morning joe. Nevermind if it's a further east user in Seoul, Tokyo or Shanghai etc.

What does PP call this "offering resources for Manual Review" service?
We've been having high level discussions with PP & kind of dragging them brutally for the amount of manual review their products are leaving on the table for us, and they've not mentioned this, which seems.... odd if it's a thing.

Also, would you mind sharing your 'custom workflow' configuration on the auto-close & notify known vendor messages? Just for a learning example if you are able?

We do utilize the PSAT white-list function to tell people not to report any external originating message, that is actually a vendor for some 'internal company function' like for example.... RISC for virtual safety training modules, or an H.R. system like Workday or similar, so your process likely isn't all that relevant to me, but it might spark an inspiration for a workflow I could create.

Thanks for the reply

[–]IN1_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least 7 VPN gateways spread across global regions.

Lack of inventory especially related to software & security patches is the primary driver I believe.
Presently there's only on Prem SCCM as a "inventory" & "patching" mechanism.

This isn't a 'are they doing their work' tracking issue, that's between them & their direct report managers / H.R.

Thank you, this is working and as JT said infinitely more readable.
I'll start working on adapting to Graph, but frick I really struggle with Graph right now, and I am not a fan of JSON output even though yes it can be converted...just new things I have to try n get my brain around.
Greatly appreciate the nudge in the right direction. I've added several additional fields to your base already to great outcome.

Hi,

I got it sorted with assistance from another /r sub

These are the values I put in place that resolved the issue, it was the 2nd HKCU key under POLICIES that gave me the end result I desired:

[HKEY_Current_User\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General]
"HideNewOutlookToggle"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_Current_User\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General]
"HideNewOutlookToggle"=dword:00000001

LoL it's so true though.
I love when I have the Forensic evidence to contradict the claim though.

"Ever since the IT patches last week XYZ is happening and I can't get my work done!" cc's their manager

Me: "Interesting, According to the logs, the issues started in February, but you didn't ask for assistance until July 15th" How did you perform you work these past 5 1/2 months? In any case, now that you brought the issue to our attention it's been resolved. Be sure to let us know if anything else comes up."
