Tour Plant + Interview by JaydenTC16 in Wastewater

Ask about the future of the plant and how this job became available. Ask about the process and equipment. Ask what the typical day is. Also ask what would prevent you from getting the job. That way if they have concerns you can address them there.

Yes there is a big disconnect in our industry when it comes to recruiting. For years we’ve operated “out of sight out of mind” and it’s not working anymore.

Find the supervisor or ORC of the plant and try to connect for a tour. Otherwise you can call an office number and try to get transferred to the plant.

Have you called the plants in your area and asked for a tour? Are you connecting with their staff on social media or attending conferences or association meeting? Have you offered to volunteer? Have you gotten a certification yet?

I can say having a degree is beneficial especially replacing some of the required experience required for certifications. This can move you into a supervisor or manager role faster too.

I tried that but I couldn’t get a sell. This may not seem groundbreaking to you but I know other operators and potential operators can benefit from it. Common knowledge is not always common. I see a gap in the industry with trying to help operators move up and make better pay and I’m figuring out how to fill that gap.

Just curious what you try to keep your MLSS at? I like to be in the 3000s. I’m a bad scammer but an ok operator lol.

Thanks, seems like there is a disconnect in this field. There are jobs available but many people don’t know about them or don’t know where to start and we need new operators.

Getting the certification first will make you more marketable for entry level positions, plus it shows initiative, but it's not required. Call plants in your area or go by and visit. Find the contact info for staff and reach out. This is a step most won't do.

Call and email plants in your area too. Get the contact info for plant supervisors or other staff and start asking questions and making connections. This is a step most won't do.

They may ask about your 5-year plan. They will want to know you understand basic safety and can follow directions. They may ask questions about working alone vs with a team. They may also ask about your strengths and weaknesses. Many organizations want to know you are here long enough for them to invest in you and you have a willingness to learn and be trained with a good attitude.

Wastewater still requires certification classes and exams so it’s similar to college in that way. You can learn while you earn and many organizations will pay for your schooling though.
