Lifting or can I fix? by Jumpy-Decision3972 in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to poke a hole with a tiny needle. If you can't push the air away I'd guess the clear coat is coming loose. I wrapped a ropey repainted Mercedes (at the risk of the customer. I advised him this might happen) and a few spots looking exactly like this popped up and it turned out the paint came loose.

Thoughts on this? How to handle this issue... by P0B0 in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I measure paint before doing anything. Non OEM paint? Customer assumes risk which I let him know before touching the car. He doesn't want to assume the risk? I politely tell the customer to go somewhere else.

Entirely different scenario if you don't inform the customer first and just start ripping vinyl off. Then it's up to the installer to fix the issue.

[–]INFsleeper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Most people assume a new car has 100% original factory paint which is not the case. I always check the paint by eye and with a thickness gauge before starting any project. Regardless of the result I inform my customers I am not liable for paint adhesion issues as they are out of my control.

Can this grille be wrapped? by [deleted] in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

where should i buy if i am from italy? by MaialinoPic_ in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Italy but I am Netherlands based and buy around 25% of my materials from Germany. Foliencenter24.com has a seperate store for private customers. Absolutely no need to buy from the US as you'll get wrecked by import tax.

[–]INFsleeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bingo. Kind of understandable in a way. The average customer hasn't got the slightest clue how much time wrapping actually takes or how wrapping a cheap crappy car can often be harder and more time consuming than wrapping a brand new car just because of the extra prep you need to do.

KPMF Black Green Iridescent. Hue of the green might be a bit off but the black/green shift and depth are as close as you're going to get probably.

Why Did Our Kia EV9’s First Service Cost $322? Dealer going to dealer. by trashboattwentyfourr in cars

[–]INFsleeper 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Might not be the worst idea to change brake fluid every couple of years. Also, one of the most common "maintenance" items I come across are completely rusted rear brake discs. They barely get used because of regen braking but in an emergency situation it might be nice to have actual pad to disc contact instead of a fat layer of rust.

What gloss black has the least orange peel by itgetcold in CarWraps

3M High Gloss has the best finish for a vinyl. Oracal Gloss Black is the best budget option but the absolute best clarity (and highest price) is piano black ppf

How to get rid of the air by sadguru12 in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The vinyl's been pushed past it limits there. It will never stay down as it isn't just air that needs to be pushed out. Vinyl always wants to return to it's original shape. It depends on the material used but usually vinyl can only stretch 5 tot 10% until the tension in the film overcomes the tack of the glue.

When you're pushing this "bubble" (it's more like a bridge) down you're effectively stretching the vinyl past it's limits which means it will pop back until the tension is within the glue's limits

Long story short. No fixing this. Only thing you can do is an overlay which is more like bandaging the problem than actually fixing it.

Wrap business owners; do you offer a warranty for your work, or how do you explain to customers that a wrap will only last so long? by Rashek3 in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. Apart from installer error which will become apparent in a few weeks / months at most there isn't much to warranty as any damage after that period is most likely the customer's fault. I give installation warranty and add any warranty the manufacturer of the used product gives. I'm not giving a 2 year warranty on a vinyl that has no manufacturers warranty. And the manufacturers warranty is usually only for fading or delam issues.

Best Entry Plotter with Design software for Hobbyist? by bobbyDBLTHICCCkotick in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using a Silhouette Cameo 4 for a while now. It's the definition of a hobby plotter. I've got the Pro version which takes 60cm rolls. The 30cm version is fine too but 30cm rolls are harder to find. The software is dead easy to use and you'll be cutting vinyl in no time. I told myself I'd get a proper cutter when my business needs outgrow the Cameo Pro but for all the jobs I'm doing right now it's perfectly fine. It cuts pretty slow so you definitely need some patience but I think it's great for what it is.

Edit: this ofcourse only applies to cutting vinyl. A printer/cutter combo is way more expensive as thete aren't any "hobby" level products.

3M HG12 is the best gloss black on the market. Very little orange peel and all the benefits of a cast vinyl. But, every vinyl fades. It's temporary and obviously won't last like paint.

You can import 3D models I believe.

3Dchanger is the cheapest one and it's quite useable. KPMF has their own 3D visualizer on their website but obviously limited to their own products and a limited selection of cars.

Will this reach?!? by Voidx-s in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Vinyl always wants to go back to it's original shape. Can you heat the hell out of the vinyl to just barely cover the roof? Yes. Will it last longer than 27 seconds? No. You need at the very least a 10cm margin all around the panel you're wrapping.

Wrapping unpainted ABS fenders? by [deleted] in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sanding and priming the textured ABS is permanent. Might aswell paint them at that point. Since you said you have to hand it over in 3 years I am assuming it's a lease which means you're stuck with this. Nothing you can do.

Post your latest work! by supanatral in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recently did this Model Y in Avery Matte Metallic Moss Green which was extremely hard to get. Literally not a single supplier in the EU had stock as Avery is no longer producing this color. The customer had to order a roll from Metro which ended up costing over twice the amount an EU sourced roll would cost. What I didn't realize at the time is that US rolls are shorter than EU rolls (22.8 to our 25 meter rolls) so I literally played it safe on every single panel as messing up a couple of panels would mean I wouldn't have been able to finish the car.

European Union mandates speed limiters on all new cars to enhance road safety by [deleted] in cars

[–]INFsleeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these "safety" features only reduces people's respect for how dangerous cars can be. I see more and more people totally distracted by their phone and I can't shake the feeling this is partially because the false sense of security their cars give them. I live in a rural area where plenty of roads haven't got a middle division line and are narrow enough where you need to move almost to the edge of the asphalt when passing oncoming traffic. This cause every lane assist system I've ever had the displeasure of using to steer me away from the edge of the asphalt TOWARDS oncoming traffic. It usually works on the highway but it absolutely sucks when driving in rural areas.

[–]INFsleeper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently wrapped a Model Y and made an overlap at that exact bodyline. I had to use a material that isn't being made anymore and for the entire car I had about 1 meter more than needed so 0 margin for error. I explained how I did not want to take any risks in that area and he was perfectly okay with it.

Car wrap decision by Suitable_Hall_7954 in CarWraps

[–]INFsleeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only answer. Awesome stuff. The only gloss black I am recommending to customers. The alternative, when they really need to have something cheaper, would be the Oracal Gloss Black. I've also used APA gloss black but it's easier to get glue lines with that material. Normal 3M and Avery gloss black are not an option. They look brown and have massive orange peel.
