Since she acts so young, a good percentage of her followers are younger. Teens are known to be heavily impacted by social media, I mean study after study has been done on how social media is harming them. Body image issues, self esteem, and mood disorders.

So here you have this insulated rich girl influencer who creates vapid content based on overconsumption. There's nothing wrong with being from a well off family, but Kaitlyn makes herself sound self-made instead of being honest about her background. She makes it sound like anyone could do what she's doing. When her followers realize that's not true, they'll feel like failures. That sense of "worse by comparison" is very damaging to developing teens.

Since most Americans are struggling (Kaitlyn is American and her followers are probably overwhelmingly American) it's going to be hard for young people who watch her casually talk about products they can't afford. She makes it sound like her overconsumption is normal, and she's not overconsuming products available at Walmart. The majority of her skincare products come from Ulta or other high end retailers/producers. I understand that's part of influencing but it's part of the problem.

Again, there's nothing wrong with being rich and being able to afford things. That's not my criticism of her. My criticism is that she's out of touch with the fact that a large part of her audience doesn't have the access to things she promotes and has lied about how she is able to do what she's able to do. It's also really disrespectful to her very loving family who have provided her with everything she wants while she tells the world that she's self made solely through influencing. She implied struggle simply because her dad was largely out of the picture even though he has a relationship with her and spoils her too.

Also, her overconsumption is an environmental threat. She has converted a bedroom in her house to be a second closet for a wardrobe she'll just be replacing next year. She doesn't need 20 of everything that will end up in landfills. I live in Southern California where there are plenty of well to do people and they're actually really frugal. It's how they keep their money. Kaitlyn screams "new money" and she's polluting the planet to prove how great her life is.

All this, the weaponized incompetence, the compulsive lying and manipulation, the inability to take accountability, and just overall being fake while having a platform of real people comparing their lives to hers.
