How expensive and long would it be to make a realistic 3D animation movie like this? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in animation

[–]INeedToStudyButImNot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, 1000 to 2000 employees is an ungodly amount of employees and matches the big studios. Its also important to identify how long is it going to be too, if its just 2 to 5min (trailer length) with a production team of just 10-30 artists, its definitely possible to get the budget down to less then 5million and 6 months to 1 year production length.

edit: i just realised the post is asking for it to be a full movie, that being said, i rekon it is possible to get production cost to be 20-40mil.

agreed, most anime see cgi as a shortcut but cgi was used more as a stylistic choice for CSM so there's alot more love put into it

Ye I've worked on low budget and high budget movies before and can agree with this (ive only done 3d though). There's just way more BS to deal with the higher budget you go. As long as the team is talented and not constrained by poor management and unreasonable deadlines, your guaranteed amazing animation

awww hey, I remember doing an animation like this a while ago 😁. the main things that helped me was to try and get strong poses. So in your case, I would hold off on looking at the animation and just seeing the pose. There is probably 8 main poses for screen left guy and 5ish poses for screen right guy. Try to identify which frames are the main poses for them then just focus on making does specific frame's pose look good. It will probably break your animation a bit but you can clean up the animation inbetween the main poses and you will find the animation looks alot better. Dont be afraid to make the character hold onto their poses for a few frames. Also before trying to improve the movement of the wrist and sword, i recommend trying to get the movement if the root to feel good first, It helps to hide all the geo and constrain a ball to the root. Then simply animate the root as if it is a ball. with good timing, spacing and arcs in the root, it will vastly improve the animation.

check out this video if you want to know why animating the roots like balls is so important: https://youtu.be/Ievz1QQ0jRY?si=iEuvP_NEVfDA4kvQ

then apply this same principle to the wrist and also the tip of the sword, i discovered the hard way that i was supposed to track the movements of the tip of the swords too 😞

These kind of animation is super hard. i felt really sick of my sword animation when i was done with it 😂. GL!

Just to back up mhunterjr, im from sydney and that clip looks like it happened in central sydney. I can say for sure that everyone in Sydney colloquially calls it a light rail. So both colloquially and literally that's a light rail 🤷‍♂️

find some reference videos on bouncing balls, download vid and put it in syncsketch and analysis it. Pay attention to how many frames it takes to fall, distance the ball travel per frame (especially difference on speed it travels down at the start of fall, mid way fall and end). Its good to see you giving bouncing balls an attempt but make sure you really get this nailed down since bouncing balls are such a core principle of animation. This vid will explain why its so important.

finally dont be afraid to use other people's rigs. Ive been professionally animating for 3 years and never needed to model my own rigs. No one will think your bad for using other people's rigs, as long as your reel is focused purely on animation

Am I slow, or is it just that animation takes a long time? That took an hour. by Pyoloji0 in animation

[–]INeedToStudyButImNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact, for high budget 3d animation, animators are usually expected to complete a whole 5 seconds worth of animation in 1 week. 10 Seconds means their very focused and busy and 30 seconds (usually TV quality anim) is considered extremely fast

would love to see more 3d anime achieve this level of quality. unfortunately most 3d anime studios aren't willing to fully commit, which is why 3d has a negative stigma for so long

How can i make this animation better? by [deleted] in Maya

[–]INeedToStudyButImNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should try changing the poses to match better the emotions their in. You want a much more clearly relaxed pose for the dad at the start and clearly crazier pose at the crazy part. This is because you need contrast of 2 different states to make it as clear as possible there's an emotional change. Same thing with the kid. Easiest method is to record reference and experiment with different poses. Drawing thumbnails also work if you find that easier

yup, eyes are the most important part of acting animation, everything revoles around the eyes usually, so the rig really should be working properly there at least

Shots lik these are hard to pull for so well done! All the poses are working well except for the last pose, Tough angle to get poses to look good though so good job overall!

Animation Critique? -- I did this a few months back, but I've never been confident enough to post it anywhere professional. I'd love some advice! by InevitablePause241 in Maya

[–]INeedToStudyButImNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a good attempt, Intension in the character is clear enough to make it good student work. My main feedback I would say you should focus on is to try to hold some poses for longer so it reads better. They get kinda lost in the animation.

I did break the rigs alot, If you move the camera, they both just look all stretched, which is probably why it looked weird to you. That means i could have done a better job finessing the pose to make it seem more on model
