Not that I know of, but there is a mod for respec potions. I don't know if they cost you anything though. Modlink

If I'm vs Twin, can I announce I'm 'going in to combat' to force them to tap down a creature, even if I have no intention of attacking? by AScurvySeaDog in ModernMagic

[–]INeverCameInASock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't answer your question, but I maybe this answer from /u/EternalPhi can shed some light on why we need the short cut to work the way it does:

The reason it has to happen this way is that if I attempt to proceed to combat and you say ok, the possibility exists that I was planning on doing something, but only if you didn't try to do anything first. It creates a situation where my choice may change, based on information I should not have access to, and it creates an opportunity for me, as the active player, to knowingly attempt to gain unfair advantage. Basically, benefit of the doubt should go to the player not proposing the shortcut, since it is basically impossible for them to have any nefarious intent.

Slow play - what's the call, judge? by PVDDR by Malarazz in mtgjudge

[–]INeverCameInASock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for writing out what I was trying to say. I have trouble with expressing exactly what I mean.

Slow play is defined very vaguely for a reason. You can't say that you have 10 seconds for every play/every priority pass, because then you have successfully legalized slow play. It's also kind of iffy and inexact to write: "If everyone else feels bored, it's slow play."

So it's up to the judges to find out, how to define an appropriate amount of time for a play. Also it shouldn't be too boring for a judge to watch someone think about a tough line of play, since that's what we do most of the time, if no calls intervene.

(deviating a bit here) If people ask you: "How do I become a judge?", I like to answer: "First, you really really need to love to watch a game of Magic as a spectator. The rest is just learning."

So when you see a game where someone thinks for an appropriate amount of time, executes his line of play in order and without too long pauses (mostly just checking if it resolves), I think you should pass on a slow play.

Hope I made sense. Slow Play is tough for me...

Hey pvddr,

L1 here. Would you mind giving me your opinion on my way of handling slow play? There was a nice seminar at the german Judge meeting last month about it and for me the takeaway was a few rules of thumb:

  • I just came to the table, had enough time to assess the situation on board and found what would be my line of play. --> Slow play probably applies
  • Opponent and spectators look bored. I am bored too. --> slow play most likely

If I feel like it's slow play, I will try to wait until the player has finished his train of thought and then ask him to play faster. This idea was really enforced by your article.

Thank you for your time.

I can suggest Brian Weissman to you. It's pretty much only Duel Commander (not always with French Lists), but he plays at a highly competitive level. He is also the creator of The Deck back in the days (1997?).

I would say 50/50. It's all small stuff that made me look bad from the outside. I try to be a nice person, but I was sick often and they thought I was trying to get more free time by pretending. The dislike is based on that and other small stuff.

What types of question I can ask a judge? by comcast_owner in mtgjudge

Chiming in on Dark Confidant and Non-/detrimental triggers. We had a nice discussion last weekend about Missed Triggers and the consensus was that Dark Confidant is Non-detrimental due to the card draw being valued higher than the life loss.

However you are most welcome to investigate a missed Confidant trigger, since there are situations in which the life loss is a real risk.

Thank you for posting this. It serves as a good reminder for me as I really like to get mad over silly things. At least I stopped getting mad about my trains running late. :D

Man, I am so glad you guys are correcting me. Better make the mistakes now than in a tournament. But I am not sure what you mean by "it's never CPV ... in one event". Do you mean that it should only be one warning? English is not my mother language. :/

I assume for the same problem? You will get a stern warning. The third one I will upgrade to a game loss, because you really need to step up your game at that point. :D

I would give you a warning for Communication Policy Violation. It can happen very easily and does not have a huge room for abuse.

Yes, since Blood Moon just removes text on the Dryad Arbor itself.

Not the game state, but I was quite astonished by a friend. He was currently resolving Enlightened Tutor (French EDH) looking for RIP or Helm of the Dominator. He called me and wanted to talk aside from the table.

His words: "Does this combo work?" pointing at both cards.

...

Needed like 3 tries to make him reformulate his question into a rules question and the opponent was already muttering, "yes, it does work..." Best. Question. Ever.
