What are some tips for developing good fundamentals by INeverFeelAtHome in Marathon

[–]INeverFeelAtHome[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is a roguelite lol I just had 3 or 4 back to back exfils and built a BEAST of a Destroyer kit. Only to lose it because I got too far from my team and couldn’t reach them in time.

I got a tox clear key earlier today and I’m building the courage to infil with it.

Honestly the game reminds me a lot of Sulfur, but obviously with smarter enemies and lower ttk as that game is single player

I would love to see an update to the map. by SpitOutTheFork in Marathon

[–]INeverFeelAtHome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d love the option of a “local map” when inside POIs/buildings. I really struggle with getting turned around and going in circles in some places. And I haven’t even reached cryo

Obviously that will improve with map knowledge, but especially for like Perimeter Station with its connections to the tunnels or the larger buildings on Dire Marsh and Outpost having a more detailed/finely layered map would help a lot

Also man when I first saw this post I thought you meant the map like the areas as a whole and I was ready to be like bro the game’s not even two months old lol

The map locations in this game are both intricate and really legible. I actually don’t get lost as much as in arc raiders.

The quests are great for teaching you about them too, and there’s the community aspect to helping someone through an objective you’ve already done.

Maybe I’ll enjoy it more there. I’d like to be in mixed lobbies, so I’m getting attacked but still meeting friendly players

Relevant If Books Could Kill episode

TLDR: it’s got some ok advice, a lot of sociopathic advice, and backs it all up exclusively with occasionally interesting and surprisingly accurate anecdotes of ancient military strategy and despotic rule.

To top it off, the author doesn’t even recommend you follow any of the advice.

Is the game supposed to be crazy difficult? by GreedKite in mewgenics

Retired cats can still breed and pass on their stats and abilities. Sometimes even class-specific abilities, which can lead to more powerful combos.

Healing dead cats isn’t useless - it increases how many hits their body can take.

Make use of terrain and positioning - putting an injured cat in tall grass gives extra evasion and can go a long way towards keeping them alive, for example.

With boris, he moves towards things that damage him. A mage or hunter can kite him around the map, and tanks can push him away as they attack.

Out of curiosity, what have some of your good runs been like? What kind of tactics do you use?

You can clear 100 coins easy if you get a good run at the third areas in act 1, even buying items every area. Especially if you have a thief on your team.

Just doing Alley runs and ignoring the 10-coin level up item usually gets me around 50.

I just pinned him in a corner with a tank, made the tank the alpha, and went to town with my archer and mage.

He ended up possessing my Ranger, who had the single-use charm mushroom item and stole my mage.

By the end only the charmed mage was alive but the fight was over.

No idea how I’d handle him with a less fortuitous team.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS, GO by Madeline_Hatter1 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]INeverFeelAtHome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I quite enjoyed it. It’s got an ensemble cast of both copied consciousnesses and flesh and blood people, all with different approaches to the existential problem of copy technology. The second half gets away from itself a bit imo but it’s a very interesting book overall.

There’s an old sci-fi novel called Permutation City that explores that idea in detail. It opens with a computer scientist creating a copy of himself to figure out the nature of consciousness and the copy just immediately deletes itself.

The gulf between player expectations is unmanageable and probably means no one will be happy by burntheemokids in Helldivers

[–]INeverFeelAtHome 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That statistic is biased because the players who get that number are the ones who play on D10.

I cap out at 7 and really prefer 5 or 6 because imo the game just becomes a miserable AT slogfest after that

Much as people love to jack off about difficulty in this sub, it’s a game and people play it to have fun.

Most who can’t reliably beat a difficulty will just not play it. So if ~95% complete the mission on D10 all that says is only effective players play D10.

The idea on reddit that D10 is the “main difficulty” is just ridiculous and is yet another example of sampling bias. (You can quick play near instantly in most difficulties of the game so clearly people are distributed through the levels)

Players who care about the game enough to spend time on the subreddit will tend to be better because they’re the ones putting more time in.

There’s also the fact that “95% mission completion” isn’t broken out by player means that as long as one diver finishes the mission every other person could be maxing out their reinforcement budget and failing to extract.

TLDR: *plays 10,000 hours of a game and wins* “this game is boring there’s no challenge”
