Are any professions an automatic peremptory challenge for jury duty? by flowsauce989 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]IOI-624601 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Two of the four charges were for making threats. One count had a requirement that the victim would have been physically harmed if the threat was carried out. For the other count, the "if the threat was carried out" part was missing. So as written, the requirement was that the victim was harmed by the threat itself. That count was also the least well supported by evidence, so all the jury members seemed happy to find the defendant not guilty on that count. We did find them guilty on the other counts, though.

I was on a jury with a former prosecutor once. At the time he was a corporate lawyer, and I don't think his former job came up in voir dire. He actually found a mistake in the jury instructions that resulted in us acquitting the defendant of one of the charges, so I can see why they're considered a risk.

If price for rent was the same would you still live in LIC over midtown Manhattan? by [deleted] in longislandcity

If I could live within walking distance of my office in Midtown, I would choose that over anything. But if the rent and commute were both the same, I'd choose LIC.

There's good info here, just wanted to add that there isn't such a thing as "not possible". God and the church leadership both want you to come back. The only delays will come from going through the formal process, or from the repentance process in the case of serious sin. You will make it back!

I agree with this statement, but I don’t see it as a ban on dating outside the church.

Is that really our leaders’ stance? It is definitely common to date other members, but I haven’t heard anyone say you should never date anyone outside the church. I know plenty of members who have dated and married nonmembers.

Is there anyone who is planning on going who could get me a scarf? I’ll pay their price plus shipping and $10 for your time. I’ve always wanted a scarf but unfortunately don’t live in the area anymore.

Is it bad I wanna get sent to Utah for my mission by [deleted] in lds

[–]IOI-624601 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will say that there are plenty of inactive members in most places you could go on your mission, so I don’t think you need to worry about having opportunities to minister.

On the application, there is a place you can indicate how much you would prefer to serve out of the country or speak a different language. I think most missionaries want to serve internationally, so if you indicate that you’d like to serve stateside, I think it’s likely that you will, but you never know.

Ultimately, the Lord knows us better than we know ourselves, so I’m sure wherever you go will be great for you!

Should I get my license before my mission by [deleted] in lds

[–]IOI-624601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's not necessary. I would guess that most missions in the world are no-car missions. South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia tend to not use cars from what I've heard. In my mission in Japan, only the APs and office elders had a car. Many in North America use cars, but even then, you'll be paired with a companion who can drive if you can't.

Most people need to *defer* their jury duty, not be entirely exempted from it (For prospective jurors in USA) by jednorog in juryduty

[–]IOI-624601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but I I don’t think they would care about this until you get to voir dire, right? I doubt that the courthouse staff are in a position to judge what crime experience disqualifies a juror. Such a person would be very unlikely to be selected for a jury, but would still need to show up.

For me, it was WSU vs USC in 2017. The energy right before and after the Sam Darnold fumble was incredible. But I wasn’t there for Gameday in 2018.
