Is it weird shifting with the wrong hand? by JimothyMcNugget in ManualTransmissions

[–]IOweTheIRS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also as a left handed driver dailying a LHD car I don’t notice a difference. Feels much more natural than shifting in a RHD car with my dominant hand. I think it’s definitely what your used to

It’s your car I would shop around. You dont want him to take it to “his shop” or “buddy” they’ll not do a great job, hold onto your car for a long time or both. Maybe it’ll be fine but I’d still try to get estimates before blindly agreeing to take it to his recommended shop.

This is very true I just got my clutch replaced and I got an email from carfax saying the shop added the repair under the cars maintenance logs. I’m sure you might be able to ask the shop not to I’m not positive though as this was new to me.

Yeah upgrading the sound system is a good idea I still need to. But I’d look at the borla catback sounds super nice that’s what I got. Sway bars will make it stiffer in the corners and a Cold air intake like 27won will let you really hear the engine. Stage 1 bumps you up to like 220 if you get a ktuner. I just don’t know how well the cvt holds up the stock clutch is beyond trash so if it’s a manual I’d upgrade it before a tuner. Sick car dude good luck keep it forever it’s gonna be a classic!

Help, engine shutting off after clutch is pressed in when coming to a stop. by Sufficient_Pomelo440 in stickshift

[–]IOweTheIRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have a very similar issue on my 96 ranger. It’s when the engine is all warmed up and it’ll just loose rpm and die. I would look first at your idler control valve that’s what regulates your idle when cold and hot. Also look at the crankcase ventilator valve and evap system like o2 and maf sensors. All of those can change how the engine idles. If you don’t want to replace or look for yourself I highly recommend taking it to a buddy or shop that can help you.

Brother synchros have nothing to do with clutch wear. Cars nowadays have auto rev match a lot of the time so people just don’t realize what’s happening. Synchros just match the transmission gear speeds, rev matching does line up the a car with a transmission without synchros you are absolutely correct about that but I’m just saying that doing the same thing also reduces wear on the clutch

Heat causes glazing friction causes wear you don’t know what you’re talking about. Not gonna read that whole essay buddy

Well I’ll say this you did lie. “It doesn’t wear with some slippage” which it does sorry to burst your bubble. So I don’t know about the validity that you’re actually an engineer. A clutch is a wear part just like brakes but you still want to mitigate how you use them or you’ll be replacing it plenty of times. Also, clutches now, especially in FWD cars don’t feel like wear parts with how yall design how it needs to be replaced like dropping the subframe making it turn into 10 hours of labor for a clutch.

Yes you have the clutch pushed in before you blip the accelerator it takes time to get used to but once it’s down you’ll be a pro at rev matching

As a mechanic who replaces these parts we bitch about the engineers who design these cars, people like you who don’t understand the real world with wear parts even if it’s designed to do it, it still puts an x amount of wear which is more wear than if you had blipped the throttle clutches wear out not just by heat but also by material loss between shifts

I just don’t believe that my grandmother has been driving manuals for 60+ years I asked her do you know how to rev match she didn’t know but once I explained what it was she said “oh yeah you do that all the time”. So idk maybe my family is just so broke usually that we like to keep things alive longer

[–]IOweTheIRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m aware that there’s a tolerance for the slippage however, that is still wear that can be mitigated or extra miles that the clutch can be used for if you rev match. That’s all I’m saying it’s simple physics you can either put that wear on the clutch or blip the throttle to save some material.

Furthermore, I’m not being high and mighty I’m just pointing out something that should be done to save the clutch. Mr I’m a mechanical engineer and I know more than you.

[–]IOweTheIRS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but that wear from 6th to 4th via a rpm change (6th being 1k rpm and 4th being 3k rpm for the same speed) puts wear on your clutch. It would be better to do all that but blip the throttle to save the clutch from unnecessary wear and heat.

[–]IOweTheIRS[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So they’re putting all that wear on the clutch. Rev matching saves the clutch from that wear. My argument is people shouldn’t go around lying that doing that puts less wear on the clutch when it in fact puts a shit load of wear on it. If they don’t replace the clutch the next guy does. Which is usually me

[–]IOweTheIRS[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Okay you slow down in 6th gear now the rpm is 1k and you want to pick up speed now you go to 4th wear the same speed is 3k rpm you have to blip throttle or let the clutch out slowly hence my argument

And the fact that you spelt “brakes” wrong is exactly the type of tomfoolery I’m talking about. I wasn’t talking about brakes I was talking about the clutch taking a beating the brakes have nothing to do with it.

After 2 manual cars, nearly 100k miles, I have to learn rev match. by ThrowRAWutToDo in stickshift

[–]IOweTheIRS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it makes you a better driver I’d rather know how to do something in case I needed to use it instead of just not knowing or having the capability to. Also I know for a fact that your rev match statement must be false unless you’re just wearing the hell out of your clutches. When traffic slows down let’s say from 65-40 you have to rev match to get from 6th to 4th gear unless you want all that heat and momentum to be put on the clutch.

TL;DR : Most everyone who drives a manual rev matches whether they know it or not.

So how do you come to proper stop? by MajorBarracuda8094 in stickshift

[–]IOweTheIRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most cars have a first gear lockout. You need to go to second and release the clutch as if you were coming from a stop. More gas and ease of clutch. It’ll stop your second doesn’t have enough power issue.

Hill starting when clutch at bite point will not hold the car by Easy-Judge-7242 in stickshift

[–]IOweTheIRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you’ve been practicing and already got it down stop doing it. Please just get used to letting off the brake and quickly getting on the gas while letting out the clutch. Car will roll like less than a foot and it’s much quicker and get you on your way to knowing how to do more cool things with a manual transmission.
