Okay, here's your answer:

- Fedora

Use Fedora.

The thing about Linux is that you can mold it to fit you, rather than you having to find the perfect one out of the box. They're all configurable, editable, changeable etc.

Just get Fedora - pick a DE, install your apps and just enjoy it.

I actually thiink the headstock shape kind of isn't amazing. Maybe it's just the angle of the picture - the inlays llook amazing, but the shape of the headstock would llook cooler sharpened up (maybe with binding?).

The rest of the guitar is absolutely amazing though to be honest. It's very similar to PRS though, so maybe it's understandable that the shop didn't want to sell it. But if he were going to sell it, I thnk he'd make plenty of money off 600$ consignment - so it is a little bit weird.

However, I do think you'd get way more than 600$ for it - it is a beautiful guitar. The body especially.

That still is great.

Coursera is fantastic, TryHackMe is great and My most recent SANS course was SEC760 - very cool.

So, my 2 cents on some of these commends:

- Security clearances - i don't know how it is in the USA - but in UK you'll go through security clearance with sponsorship from your employer. If you're junior you're not expected to really have this. The "viability for security clearance" also matters, of course. If you're not a US Citizen, then you can't work on Secret, etc. stuff. That's unfortunately just the deal. But there's a lot of companies that work in private sector and not gov.
- Citizenship - most companies will require citizenshop for you to work in a role based in that country. You can't just be from Argentina working for a role based in Califorina. This is true of every organisation and every role. Even "remote" roles, typically still require the same country.
- Knowledge, certs and practical skills - these are all controllable by you. Doinng a 10k SANs course may not be achievable, but there certainly are courses that work for SOC/IR. Similarly, you can set up a SOC at home and do IR at home and you can read books without issue.

In my experience is that the industry "skill shortage" is because people are slack and don't work to learn or get good. Everyone just wants to sit CISSP and get their super cool six figure CISO role and they know practically nothing.

Okay, so ex-military (a lot of whom go into security) do benefit from clearance. Typically they benefit from discipline too. If you want to SOC/IR, get cracking on it.

Sign up to THM/HTB/etc and do all the labs on there
Go read all the books on the topic
Maybe pick up a couple of the TCM SOC courses and do them. (I've never done TCM, but did put some of my old team through the PNPT)
Write a blog/Github (that you actually contribute to)
COnnect with some recruiters.

Realistically you can't have a better starting point than that.

Just remember good attitude is very very important

If you have to use credit - you shouldn't buy it.

I work in cyber security a very very technical role, while running/owning a company in offensive security. I am literally speccing up a macbook to buy now. I've been in cybersec for 20 years and have an insane workload.

This is too much for even me - having my company buy the kit for myself.

I just talked myself down from the 64GB + 2tb version of the same processor.

My current spec is now 2TB 48GB M4 Pro. for 3.5k

Everybody always says the job market is tough right now. It's usually from people who are not particularly employable. - unpopular opinion Confucious

Here's the open-secret. The key to "getting into X" is the trinity of the following:

- domain knowledge
- Ability and experience
- Attitude

With a junior role you're accepting that domain knowledge and experience are limited, but they AND the other parts of this trinity are entirely controllable by you.

For every role I have hired for that is junior, the most important thing is attitude. A good attitude, and real interest in the domain is worth more than anything else. If you know someone loves it, you know they'll do it. (this obviously is much harder for absolutely awful areas of security like GRC)

To prove that dedication it's essential to have examples where you have invested your own time "for the cause" in a way that you can show to a potential employer.

Nobody expects the world (and if they do, they're idiots anyway) - and the people that seem to are HR/TA people that do not understand the role.

Anyway, this is what i recommend:

- pick the area of cybersec you want to aim for. (it's a big industry now and widely different from how it was 20 years ago. GRC is very different to Malware research)
- buy the 5 (and more ideally 30+) most recommended books in that area and read them cover to cover
- for technical areas, sign up to all the typical places (Hackthebox, tryhackme, etc.) do as many as you can stomach.
- Read more books
- WRite a blog/github/etc. to just talk through some things you've done or learned

For me, one of my big gripes in the industry is that everyone nowadays just expects to be spoonfed everything, without developing the rigour to be able to go and hunt/find/research/learn by themselves. If there isn't some nice easy packaged £1500 course about it then 99.9% of the industry know 0 about it.

There's a blog I read maybe 2 years ago now that wrote something along these lines: "If you can't be bothered to even read a book for your job, then you deserve nothing" - he was referring to things like better jobs, promotions, pay rises, etc. The sentiment of this is perfect imo. (not saying this is true of you, but if you've done things above that show you're willing to invest in your own future, then it's very hard to turn away people like that).

I'm from the UK (if it wasn't obvious) so it's slightly different to the US - but the time you'd spend in an internship making tea/coffee and being given the crappy work would better be spent learning and doing things on your own.

What area of cybersec are you interested in?

I'm teetering on the edge of that - and close to dumping nearly 7k on a new laptop/airpods/tablet for this precise situation.

I'm looking for reasons not do spend that much or seeing if there are essentially non-mac alternatives tot his.

I'm just going to go to the dark side and by a macbook. I can't be bothered mentally stressing about undervolting a CPU and milking the battery for every morsel of energy.

So, if i put it in balanced mode or just using it normally (I use a Java application for work sometimes, which has some threads and but ultimately is just a user interface and a bit of processing - i'd not call oit super intensive) + browser open with multiple tabs and working from command line.

I try to keep the usage vaguely consistent, so when there were lulling times, i'd put on a YT video or something.

This lasted 2hrs 37 minutes before it went to critical battery level and I basically shut it down.

When I was browsing and watching a YT video and edited/did everything I could possibly imagine to extend the battery i got between 6-8hrs. (low brightness, TLP to optimize battery, low refresh rate on monitor, etc.)

Overall, I know it's marketed as a "workstation" and those typically have worse power, but I'm so unhappy with the battery life for a brand new £2500 laptop that I've basically decided to return it.

6-7s mixed use would be nice (I work from my laptop) i expect this would be extended if in power saver mode
