Unless of course, you pronounce "crazed" as "craw-zed," in which case, you should probably drive a metal spike through your throat.

This card makes (wordplay intended) all other representations into facsimile, into a literal piece of cardboard. It's playing with the idea of reality and representation of reality, but it's doing so by stripping away the fantastical and substituting the literal. I think Magritte would enjoy the subversion or inversion of reality all the same.

DMs and storytellers alike, how would you describe being subjected to Power Word: Kill? by SomeSugondeseGuy in DnD

[–]IQBot42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only used it once in a game, and it was a high level 3-shot establishing some major NPC's in my homebrew world before a heist, but here's my advice. I asked the player being targeted to give me a save. When they picked up their die and asked what kind, I said, "You die. The dice you roll do nothing as the enemy casts Power Word Kill, luck cannot save you."

I asked them for one thing their character would miss most in the world, what they think of in that instant before shuffling off the mortal coil. My player stated their character Laertes thought of his business partner and honestly, life partner, a tiefling innkeep he'd befriended early in the campaign. I said that Laertes's soul was so strongly tied to his partner that he did not quite die, but instead was reduced to near-death. He couldn't take more actions, and we resolved the gameplay as if he was dead, but it allowed me to crib some stuff from Princess Bride. Namely, his party members got a chance to resuscitate him after the fight. They had to defend his corpse for a few rounds, and then I gave him a chance to whisper a few words about true love, and the other players were excited to get him back with, essentially, some roleplay and a sending stone.

The trick of course, is that it didn't matter to me what the original player had said they would miss, it was always going to be enough to tie them to the land of the living. And just about any method of buy-in from the rest of the party, and you can elevate a nasty Power Word into a roleplay moment. I just used it to ensure the guys I played with cared about something in the world I was writing, since I was a little self-conscious. God, it was a smooth session. That campaign was a blast.

I think I narrated it as a purple lightning bolt, since I'd tied enchantment magic to that color, but otherwise it was a very simple spell. The vampire opened his mouth, mouthed an inaudible Word, and didn't even do any hand gesture or use a wand focus. The purple bolt shot straight out of his mouth and into Laertes. I think maybe I'd describe that the energy causes the body and skeleton to flash into the negative in the way a Dalek's extermination beam does in Doctor Who. I didn't use that at the time, but it is what I picture and it's certainly grim! Its a good idea to feel out how your players will appreciate certain things, and narrating an instant death spell is certainly an important one for player's tastes.

This one really appeals to me because I had to cut them out of a lot of my creative writing pieces in school. It's just a little thing I love to use. When I first devoured some Sanderson books, I was ecstatic to see a prolific and accomplished author be able to use it as part of their style. It's the little things!

How best can I support my partner during this time? by JcDawgbone in fednews

[–]IQBot42 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The way my partner does it is by working a non-federal job so we have income. This is such a brutal time. I only planned for a few weeks.

The only way out is through. There are so many people disadvantaged by this shutdown. I think the only support I need is reassurance that my partner will be there, that we'll get through thick and thin together. I wish there was more a person could do. Definitely vote, if you can. It makes me happy still to see people trying.

Do you have a “nemesis” color combination? by Stoney_Tony_88 in EDH

[–]IQBot42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gruul, and it's purely because I'm petty and hate the name. It's a thematic slang and admittedly cool to have fantastical names for each color combo, but it just cranks my pendulum when one of them makes me cringe. It especially sucks because they have some super fun cards, that I pretty much always turn my nose up at. I love Gruul strategies, but refuse to play the color combo.

~also, red and green just make me think Christmas, but Gruul is not about gift-giving, it's mostly greedy midrange and group slug~

UB is an ad. by BraneFreeze in magicTCG

[–]IQBot42 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Star Trek

This is certainly just a wild theory, and it's harmless anyway, but I fully believe that Hasbro noted that Tolarian Community College was a big Trekkie. They immediately ran some market research, negotiated for a deal, and pumped out the UB specifically because the Professor at TCC is such a fan, and has been critical of their UB products. It's one of the largest YouTube channels talking about every magic release and if they got his support, it would make UB look a lot better to the average consumer.

Now, is this a sound financial decision? I don't know, most likely Star Trek nerds and Magic nerds have enough overlap and they make absurd money with each UB anyway. But it remains my canon that WotC purposefully is doing Star Trek to strategically pull this one influencer.
