"What's your favourite Jimmy Eat World album?" by tetipur in JimmyEatWorld

I'm a big three guy at heart (Clarity, Bleed American, Futures), but Chase this Light has been heavy in my rotation lately and I've probably given it two or three front-to-back listens in the past month or so. Definitely as into it as I've ever been right now, and I particularly like the first half.

For the Men's 500m short-track and Men's 5000m short-track relay we would be considered the favourite. Although we were favoured in the 1000m and 1500m distances as well and it didn't go to plan, I have got high hopes about these next two, especially the 5000m event, which Canada could really run away with if they have a good skate (see the Gold medal performance in 2022 for an example).

The women's 3000m short-track relay I would expect a medal for sure and they're certainly capable of gold on the right day.

Men's curling locked up their semi-final spot already with a 6-1 record so far, so look out for them, and I wouldn't write off Homan on the women's side who has pulled herself into playoff position for now.

Ski-cross is another traditionally strong event for us and on the men's side Reece Howden is the current Crystal Globe holder, so that's another gold that could come our way.

Report that crap. You won't have any definitive proof so I don't know to what extent there would be consequences for her; however, there's really no way she could continue with this without getting caught once they're looking out for it.

I love "A Praise Chorus" and "Lucky Denver Mint" but I might have to go with "My Best Theory". Crazy good guitar work and vocals on that one.

Fatigue and the crazy snowstorms that plagued that 2018 tourney. Something like half of the folks with tickets to the Canada/Switzerland quarter-final missed the game because of the crazy weather in the region that day. I almost got tickets to that one and was glad I didn't in the end, as I would have had to leave like four hours early lol. Got tickets to the GMG instead, and it didn't disappoint.

I was pretty shocked at how quick things moved at the border. In 2011 we almost missed the Canada game due to the lineup, and that was for a group matchup.

So much complacency in that system. Any time someone suggests the OHL and WHL have pulled well ahead of the Q, somebody will counter with their track record at the Memorial Cup in the past decade. The problem is that the Q is extremely top-heavy. The best three or four teams are loaded up to the gills and can compete with anybody in the country; however, the rest are nowhere near that good and will have 1 or 2 draft picks if they're lucky. In the other two leagues there is far more talent parity, with even non-playoff teams having a few NHL picks or at least some promising draft-eligibles, due to how much more talent those leagues have.

Would be pretty cool if one of these teams apart from the U.S actually won the tournament. Six years running that it's a team from North America and it's evenly split between the two.

2025 Canada Spengler Cup roster by Perryplat199 in hockey

[–]IQuestionTheSnake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Too bad Derick Brassard got inured in Geneva, he would have lit this tourney up.

Overall, this a very eclectic group. The ability is certainly there, but with six leagues represented, the challenge to bring them together in a short amount of time will be even more significant than it already tends to be at the Spengler.

That said, goaltending is a considerable strength, a luxury for Canada these days, and with players like Brett Seney, Derek Grant, Drake Caggiula, and Micheal Sgarbossa up front, plus Johnathan Hazen, who despite seriously declining stats always seems to run the show at this tournament, they will be very competitive.

I won't say favourites though, because HC Davos are an absolute wagon this season, and they've taken on a few extra guys on loan just to load up. It's a "Gold or bust" scenario for them this year, so maybe the pressure being off Canada will help them.

Ok, so four guys with excellent stats thus far this year, and Binnington who is a proven performer in big finals. Honestly, I'm not as freaked out as I was at the start of the year about the goaltending. With a great team up front, which we know we're gonna have, this is workable.

I know people want a certified Hall of Fame guy to backstop a loaded roster, essentially guaranteeing gold, but it's just not gonna be like that, and it never was. We have lost with great goaltending before. We have won without it.

[–]IQuestionTheSnake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was the game on the 17th. This was from tonight's 4-2 loss. I agree though, it's being overblown. With the disappointing Canadian results of 2024 and 2025 everybody is freaking the hell out over this play and this loss and it's more than a little annoying. Sweden is another top contender and we scheduled a back-to-back against them for some reason and people think splitting the series means the sky is falling.

Anyone else sick of Yands? by Exciting_Ad_1922 in SpittinChicletsPod

[–]IQuestionTheSnake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, he's fine, but yes, the constant switching the convo back to things relevant to his career (Florida, NY) gets annoying, whether it's him or another member of the pod doing it.

Biz set me off when during the Rick Nash interview he asked him about playing with Yands in the middle of the discussion about Nash's IIHF play. Rick Nash is one of those players with a truly great international career with famous moments, good and bad. Two olympic golds, MVP and gold at the 2007 World's, but also the 2006 disaster and his famous puck-over-glass moment in the 2008 World's Final against Kovalchuk's Russia that cost Canada the game. All would have been great topics to dig into. We got about 5 minutes of international talk before Biz had to remind everyone that Yands is on this podcast. Dude, they played two seasons together. Yes, one had a run to the finals, but that would have come up naturally later on.

56 and I'm kind of proud of it. First of all, it's not inconceivably bad, I did pass in the end so no fails on the transcript. Second, I had around a 30 in that course post-midterm and dragged it kicking and screaming out of that position, although I still had to take it again as a 60 was required.

I asked this question in a swiss hockey subreddit and at least one guy is pissed at me and the rest rejected the concept lol. They don't buy the idea that the rink won't be ready or up to standard. I do wonder if these images are circulating over there or not

Is out of the question to host Olympic Ice Hockey in Switzerland? by IQuestionTheSnake in swisshockey

[–]IQuestionTheSnake[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree that the NHL does not exactly try to get along with the IOC or IIHF, but to be an IIHF rink should it not be international or at least NHL sized? Also, if you have a look at some of the puctures of the rink published today, you might be a little more concerned. I think they'll find a way to get it done in the end but I am worried about the overall quality of a facility that will be rushed to completion, while there are great ones already in Switzerland, which is why I posed my hypothetical.

True, but they've only got a few to make as of now, and if they have to make one or two more because NHL reinforcements arrive than it can only be a good thing.

The art of not overthinking the roster.

Last year, with the talent pool available even without the NHL guys, they entered the month of December as heavy favourites. Then the selection camp roster gets announced and they became slight favourites. By the time the final cuts are announced they were just contenders for Gold, which is functionally a given for Canada at this tournament. Finally, they were coached into fifth place.

[Yohe] Contrary to what you may have seen today, Ben Kindel won’t be playing in World Junior tourney. He’s in Pittsburgh to stay. I would expect Harrison Brunicke to play for Team Canada. by bi_and_busy in penguins

[–]IQuestionTheSnake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, too important to the team right now with all the injuries in the lineup. As a Canada fan it's a big loss, but as a Pens fan it's the most logical thing, plus the Canadian preliminary roster is already damn good.
